Stamford Bridge Blues and Destroying The Enemy

Well, it's not like I didn't see it coming....I can think, well, it's only the League Cup....but again I out-played them....anyhow...the winning run had to end some time.....

How the team bounced back was crucial...my experience of this game has shown that long winning streaks are ofton followed by a run of crap results....Fulham next and a chance to put the last game behind us or fall apart...

A great response from the lads....

The Christmas period is the time when you are glad you have a big squad....just 2 days later and it's off to Old Trafford where a draw would do nicely...

Fantastic....nothing beats turning over Utd on thier own turf....and now I really am starting to believe that the title can be ours....solid at the back and goals flying in....and no surprise to see Breno pick up this award...he can't stop scoring....

Consistency and the drive for the title

After destroying United at Old Trafford the team feel invincible....I'm sure a losing streak is waiting for me yet so every win now is vital....

I know...this has to be some kind of bug....but I'm not complaining....

Next up a trip to Upton Park...not got a great record there so go into it a little wary...

My first draw of the season...it almost feels like a defeat after recent sucess...but another clean sheet....next up it's Arsenal in the cup...not the kindest draw for the 3rd round I could have wished for....

Another satisfying result before another trip down to the South East and a chance to take revenge on Watford for thier freak victory over us early in the season...

But despite these reults I am still not really shaking Chelsea off...

Revenge out the way....

The first big exit out the squad...Lulinha is a great prospect but was unfortunate to be in a team with about 10 attacking midfielders....there was only so many times he would put up with me turning down offers so in the end he went to Camp Nou....

The Machine Begins To Wobble...

First up it's an FA Cup Tie, having been stitched up with Arsenal in the 3rd round another Premiership side awaited me in the next - but I felt a little more confident about this one...that said, the team really had to work for it.

Perhaps the signs were there that things may be slowing down...I didn't think there was any way to sustain the form we were in and a tricky tie at White Hart Lane confirmed it...the scoreline flattered Liverpool as Spurs outplayed us for long periods of the game...

First defeat in the league in a long time and I'm wishing I had put a bit of space between me and Chelsea....as always the immediate response is vital....a home tie and a chance to reap revenge on Martin O'Neil....

Again a close run game but a win none the less and we bounce back, if with a little less swagger than before....a quick return to the JJB followed and a test to see if we could start to pick things back up to how they were...

Much more encouraging....perhaps the wobble is over already...the final big push for the title is underway...

The Battle at the Reebok and Cup Dreams....

I'm not sure what instructions the Bolton manager gave his players before this fixture but I have a feeling it went along the lines of 'hurt them...that's all I ask'

The game was dire and only the miracle that is Breno saved us in the last minute....but the game was more memorable for Bolton kicking my players to bits for 90 mins...

So with that stuttering display my hopes of a quick return to goal frenzy wins has been brought back to reality....however good fortune continues to smile my way...Pompey knoeck Chelsea out the cup to set up this tie which we won with some ease to set us on our way to dreaming of the final....

So the last surge for glory awaits...top of the league...Champions League continues with a trip to Juventus next followed by the crucial tie at New Anfield against 2nd placed Chelsea...the squad seem ready....

a quick look at the squad and the pick of the bunch so far....

So a 100% record going into the season and hopes are high...first game is against Everton and a good start should keep the board happy...

Just before that I thought I'd show England's bizarre appearence in the Copa America....go figure? Am looking forward to Brazil turning up in the Euro Championship next...FM has it's little moments....

U know,

If england really wanted to participate in Copa America, and if Conembol felt felt that if would be beneficial to have them, then England would have the right to play in Copa America. The difference between Euro Championships and Copa and Gold Cup is that they can give guest spots to teams who they feel would help competition and/or exposure

For instance Mexico, has been invited to Copa America since 1994? and the US played at it in 1994 and 2007. South Korea played at Gold cup in 2000 as they were above and beyond the caliber of other asian teams. So while it's not common, it could happen in real life!

Defending the trophy and the 6-pointer

So the serious business starts in the UEFA Champions League....still baffling how we managed to win the thing at the end of such an average season....winning the group did me no favours as a trip to Turin to face Juventus proved hard work, but 2 away goals are a good platform for the return leg....

Not much time to recover before the crunch game with Chelsea...unable to shake them off all season this was my chance for a morale boost and settle so many scores...

A great performance from the boys and surely the platform for building up a good lead over them for the last push for the title....

so what do we do next? well, we lose of course and the good work was all for nothing!

Not the best preparation for the return leg against Juve....a packed house at New Anfield...if we got an early goal nerves would settle....

A shocking Juventus buckled under pressure and an easy path in to the quarter finals....I must admit, I was a little surprised but then I did have Breno back from injury....it's starting to feel unrealistic....how many hatricks can a defender really score? oh well....

Everton away next in another cup encounter....confidence is sky high and although it was a battle, you-know-who saves the day again....

A semi final with Newcastle awaits...

Another league game, should be easy but again it was a struggle...but then I've got Breno...why panic?

Playing badly and winning...

They say any title winning side must at some stage be able to grind out 3 points, even without playing well...and so it was with the next 3 games...all should have been easy on paper but the team seem to have taken thier foot off the gas....perhaps burn-out is setting in....

I knew we had to step up a gear though...a trip to real madrid was next and they would not show the same forgiveness ....

Good luck with the trip to Real Madrid. Should be interesting game.

Also some good results there apart from the City game.

Keep up the good work.

Cup exits and glory nights

With the team playing below par the trip to Madrid came at the wrong time....something wasn't quite working and with Real flying I feared the worst...

The crucial away goal keeps me in the tie but my squad look jaded...another tough game followed and the only trophy I haven't won eludes me yet again....

Suddenly it's all turning sour....memories of my 3rd season spring to mind...top the whole season before falling apart on the last day....

Arsenal next....another tough fixture is the last thing I need...

Just the result we needed before the 2nd leg with Real...can we raise our game and turn it around?

Big European nights and running out of steam

Without a doubt the team have slipped a little...certain players were beginning to come to the end of thier good form and depth of squad was playing a key part.

I hadn't given up hope of not only a league title but also winning back to back Champions League trophies...in order to do that I needed to overturn the 2-1 defecit against Real Madrid....I'd like to think it was one of those nights that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

The dream is still alive and sets me up with a repeat of last seasons semi final showdown.

A chance then to concentrate on wrapping up the league...if I picked up some good form again I could win it with games to spare.

The title is within touching distance...expectation is high and the pressure is definatly building.

Throwing it away?

It may have seemed like a matter of time before the title comes to Anfield but there is no way my team are going to do it the easy way.

Already knocked out of the cup by the Toon Army they poured more misery on me at St James before a lack-lustre display against Bolton.

I can it all falling apart...a trip to Stamford Bridge for the Champions League...my only hope that I'm still in the tie at the final whistle.

A great strike from the substitute gives us a priceless advantage, one foot in the final and hopefully a psychological blow against my fierce rivals.

We got there....eventually.

Well, my team hardly swaggered over the finish line with ease. We may have topped the league for pretty much the whole season but with 2 league games to go it was still up for grabs.

A win against Fulham would seal it...Torres tries to rally the troops...it's in our own hands at least....

But Chelsea help us out by dropping points at Blackburn. A 3 point lead going into the final day but a goal difference advantage of +12 means it would take something bizarre to lose it now.

The final game was against Man Utd at Anfield...and so sweet it felt to think of them having to give the trophy back to us in front of our fans....

Between that of course was the 2nd leg showdown with Chelsea...a vital 1-0 lead another tense night at Anfield was in store....it was a nail biting last 10 minutes as Chelsea threw everything into attack, but a 2nd sucessive final was ours.

A final against Inter in Berlin to finish the season off...in the meantime, the usual awards were dished out and nobody deserved it more than Breno...an unbelievable season for a defender.
