Roy Keane has left his post as Sunderland manager to fill the vacant space at Celtic, left by Gordon Strachan. Strachan left just days ago to take some time out from football, after winning his second SPL title.
Keane enjoyed a colorful playing career. He started out at native Irish side Cobh Ramblers, making 12 appearances. He was then spotted by Nottingham Forest boss Brian Clough who signed him for £47k in the summer of 1990.
In the third round of the 1991 FA cup against Cyrstal Palace; Keane made a bad error, which led to a goal. In the dressing room after the match Clough punched Keane in the face through anger. Keane however, said that he held nothing against Clough for it. Claiming to be sympathetic to Clough, due to the pressures of management.
In 1993 Keane joined Manchester United for £3.75 Million, a British transfer record at the time. Keane quickly established himself in the centre of the park for United. Winning the League and FA Cup in his first season. His second season at United ended in disappointment as United lost the League title to Blackburn Rovers. And the FA Cup to Evrton.
Keane was handed the captaincy at United after legend Eric Cantona retired from football in the 1997 season. Sadly Keane missed most of that season because of a cruciate ligament injury caused by an attempt to tackle Leeds United player Alf Inge Haland. As Keane lay on the ground in agony Haland stood over him accusing Keane of trying to hurt him, and faking injury to escape punishment.
Keane came back from injury in the 98/99 season better than ever, leading United to a treble of the League, Fa Cup and Uefa Champions League.
Keane showed his darker side in 2001 during a Manchester derby, With Alf Inge Haland in the Manchester City team. Keane was sent of Five minutes from the final whistle, for a high knee foul on Haland, which was seen by many as an act of revenge. In Keane's 2002 autobiography, he wrote:
"I'd waited long enough. I f*****g hit him hard. The ball was there ( i think). Take that you c**t. And don't ever stand over me sneering about fake injuries." "My attitude was, f**k him. What goes around comes around. He got his just rewards. He f**ked me over and my attitude is an eye for an eye."
Overall, Keane played 323 games for United, scoring 33 goals. He also lead United to 9 majour honours, making him the clubs most successful captain. He holds the joint record of the most red cards received in English football, being sent off a total of 13 times. Keane was inducted to the English football hall of fame in 2004, and became the only Irish player in teh Fifa 100, a list of the greatest living footballers, picked by Pele.
Keane was allowed to leave Manchester United in 2005, after a series of outbursts about fellow players, and rows with manager Alex Ferguson.
Keane signed for his boyhood hero's Celtic soon after his realese from United. He went on to make 10 appearances for the club. Scoring a goal vs Falkirk, and winning Man Of The Match vs Old Firm Rivals Rangers.
After only Six months at Celtic, Keane had to call his wondeful career to a halt through medical advice.
Keane begun his managerial career at Championship side Sunderland. He fast became a fan's favorite at the The Stadium Of Light. After guiding The Mackems to the Coca Cola Championship Title. He looked all set to take on the big guns in the Premiership but the surprise resignation of Gordon Strachan marks the beginning of a new stage in the legends managerial career.
Keane will be unveiled at a press conference tomorrow.
Peter Lawell - Hello Ladies and gentlemen. I would like you all to welcome Roy Keane back to Celtic. Everyone at Celtic is delighted to have him back, and we are sure he will bring further success to the club. Any questions?
Journalist - Hello Roy. What made you leave Sunderland for Celtic, after you had worked so hard to win promotion to the Premiership? Roy Keane - Celtic were my boyhood hero's. I have supported them my whole life. And i was delighted to fulfill my dream of playing for them. My playing career here was cut short because of injury, but i always knew i would be back one day. I told myself whenever the chance came i would be back in Glasgow managing Celtic, and here i am.
Journalist - How happy are you happy with the squad of players you have? Roy Keane - Well i think Gordon is a great manager. He has built a very good team and i am happy with it. I know a few of the lads at the club from the Six months i spent here as a player. And they are really talented players. Saying that i believe there is always room for improvement. And i will be looking to improve certain ares this season.
Journalist - Do you have any particular players you would like to bring to the club? Roy Keane - Yes, but I'm not about to tell you who they are.
Journalist - What are your ambitions for this season? Roy Keane - Well we will be looking to win every game we play of course. Celtic have a long tradition of winning things, and i want to keep that tradition. I want to mainly concentrate on the future of the club. I want to give our youth a chance. Every young player at the club will be given till 21 to prove he is good enough for the first team. Unless he would rather leave of course. I will also be looking to bring in a lot of new younger players this season. Most will not be ready for the first team right away, so i wish to ask the Celtic fans to be patient with them. I have to go meet up with my team now, goodbye.
Hello and welcome to Celtic TV. New Celtic manager Roy Keane has promised to bring in a lot of youth to build for the future. Keane has told us that most of these new youth players will not be ready for first team action this season, so it is likely that he will be relying on the current squad to do the business this year. We are going to take a look at a few of the players who could be vital for Keano this season.
Artur Boruc Brought to Celtic for little over £500k from Legia Warszawa during a successful loan spell in Gordon Strachan's first season at Celtic. Time and time again he pulled off spectacular saves. His performances in the sticks have won many vital matches over the past Two seasons. And it's no surprise that European giants such as Arsenal and AC Milan have been trailing the 27 year old Pole. Boruc was a key player for Strachan over the past couple of seasons. And we are sure he will be key for Keane as well.
Massimo Donati Highly tipped as the next big thing in Italy during his time at Atlanta in the late 90s and early 2000's. He was also starring for the U21 side. He got his big money move to Italian giants AC Milan in 2001 for £10.25M. Sadly for Donati, thing's didn't quite work out the way he had hoped at Milan, and he was loaned all over Italy for the next Six seasons. Strachan was impressed by his performances and made a move for him. Securing the transfer for little over £1M later that month. Now at 27 the Italian has the chance to get his career back on track. And from what we have seen from him, he looks like a very good box to box midfielder. Whether he settles in Scotland and gets used to the style of football is a mystery. We are hoping that things go well for him here at Celtic. And we are sure he can be a hit for Celtic.
Shunsuke Nakamura The 71 times capped 29 year old Japanese free kick specialist came to Celtic during in the 05/06 season. Nakamura is an excellent player, but struggles with injuries. He has scored 15 times in his 70 games for Celtic over the past Two years. And sealed the league title last season with a wonderful free kick against kilmarnock. His vision, passing and set-piece ability have been invaluable for the Bhoys over the past Two seasons. And if he can he can keep it up, then Keane will be laughing all the way to 3 in a row.
So we have taken a look at who might be a star for Celtic this season. Let's see who might be starring for the Hoops in the years to come.
Scott Cuthbert The 20 year old defender who was the Under 19s captain, before he stepped up to the reserves, is yet to make a first team appearance for Celtic. Last season he spent One month on loan at Scottish First Division outfit Livingston. Cuthbert made Four appearances in that month, scoring One goal. Scott will also be captaining Scotland's Under20 side at the 2007 World Cup in Canada. The future looks very bright for Scott. It is unlikely he will feature much in the first team this season, but we are sure we will be seeing a lot of this young man in years to come. Paul Caddis Paul Caddis is a 19 year old full back. He was scouted by both Celtic and Rangers during his school boy days, but opted to join Celtic. Paul is yet to make a first team appearance for Celtic. Caddis is the Under 19s captain, but often plays with the reserves. Caddis looks to have a good future ahead of him for both Celtic and Scotland.
Cillian Sheridan The 18 year old from Ireland looks to have all the attributes for the perfect striker. Standing at 6'5" he is always going to pose an ariel threat. BUT despite his height he is also very quick and very agile. He made his first team debut in a cup tie against ICT. If Cillian keeps progressing then he can become a very BIG player indeed. Evander Sno Sno was signed for Celtic for next to nothing last season from Dutch side Feyenoord. He made 18 appearances last season, scoring 1 goal. Sno is very strong and is a great passer of the ball. Sno will have to work very hard to hold down a first team place against the current competition. But we know he has the ability.
KEANE MAKES SHOCK SWOOP FOR RANGERS TEEN SENSATION!
Celtic gaffer Roy Keane has today shocked Scotland by moving to sign Rangers 15 year old attacking midfielder John Fleck. Fleck is highly regarded as one of Scotland's top youth talents. He has a youth contract which expires in 2011, although he would be able to move to Celtic for a £575k compensation fee. If the move goes through then Fleck will become the first footballer ever to move directly from one Old Firm club to another.
Keane had this to say on the matter. " I don't see why everyone is making such a big deal out of this. Players should be able to move from Rangers to Celtic and Vice-Versa, without fear of being scrutinized against. What century are we living in? Catholics have been signing for Rangers and Protestants's Celtic for years now. John is a great young player, and i hope to add him to my squad soon."
Several player's look set to leave Celtic Park after Celtic manager Roy Keane decided they do not have a place in his new look team. Most notabley Stephen Mcmanus, who was highly tipped for the captaincy. Mcmanus is beleived to be in contract talks with Bolton with Wigan interested in the 24 year old stopper.
Also on there way out is Dutch giant Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. The 'Big Dutch Yin' scored 13 goals in his 21 appearences for Celtic last season, after his £3.4M switch from PSV.
Michael McGovern who has been at the club sinse 2001 has been told by Keane he will be leaving. Many clubs from down South are rumoured to be chasing the 22 year old keeper from Nothern Ireland.
23 year old John Kennedy who has been suffering from knee trouble over the past few seasons will also be leaving. Along with Striker Chris Killen, who was only just brought to the club by Strachan this season.
Scout Tom O'Neil , who joined the club in 2000 was sacked by Keane yesterday.
Roy Keane has been quick to act in the transfer market this summer. Making Two new signings.
Argentine Pablo Piatti joined the hoops in a deal thought to be worth £1M. 18 year old Piatti who quit Estudiantes (LP) for Celtic, holds a European passport. Therefore did not have to attain a work permit.
Icelandic midfielder Eggert Jonsson joined the bhoys from Hearts in a swap deal for injury hampered defender John Kennedy. Celtic will also receive over £1M for Kennedy, and will be owed a percentage of the fee, should Hearts decide to sell him.
Keane is also thought to be discussing contracts will Two other players. And promises to reveal his first Four signings at a press conference, when he gets the contracts tied up.
