Stoke came at Scunthorpe throughout the match but Iriekpen was a rock at the heart of the defense and was equal to every long ball pumped forward by a less than impressive Stoke side. Paul Hayes sealed the victory on 71 minutes and their was no doubt that his name will be on the score sheet this time, he pounced on a poor clearance by Simonsen in the Stoke goal and finished into an empty net. “The lads played their heart out” declared the Iron boss, “Izzy was sensational and Paul [Hayes] has shown that he is more than capable of finding the back of the net”. Fans will be hoping that this victory could be the start of something good and that performances like this will become a regular occurrence. Sunday 7th October ‘Izzy’ Iriekpen consoles Jonathan Forte following Scunthorpe’s defeat at Hillsborough. Despite taking the lead in this game, the Iron were once again undone by an injury time winner on Tuesday night, Lee Trundle fired home the opener for the travelling Iron but a brace by Marcus Tudgay on the stroke of half time and in the dying seconds of the match was enough to condemn Scunthorpe to a crushing defeat at the hands of former boss Brian Laws who had nothing but praise for his former side, “Scunthorpe played well tonight, and it was terribly unlucky to concede in the final seconds of the game as they probably deserved a point.” When asked what he thought of current Iron boss James Brough, Laws had this to say, “I don’t know much about him, nobody seems to, which makes playing against his side difficult. He has made a few interesting signings, particularly bringing Billy [Sharp] back. I’ll be keeping a keen eye on how he does though.” Brough responded in a typically nonchalant manner by saying, “Brian left the club and as a result left the fans, I wish him luck at Sheffield Wednesday but will certainly be doing him no favours in future.” INJURY TROUBLES WORSEN FOR BROUGH The Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph today heard how Iron front man, Lee Trundle will miss at least 6 weeks after fracturing his left wrist at training. Trundle rounded reserve keeper Josh Lillis in a training match only to be brought down by his outstretched hand, landing awkwardly on his wrist he was taken to hospital where X-Rays revealed a fracture. Martin Paterson will be expected to fill the void upfront. AWAY DAY BLUES The Iron were handed their third consecutive away defeat yesterday at the hands of Ipswich, a first half header from Alan Lee caused a major talking point amongst fans and pundits alike with many believing it to have been offside. Iron boss Brough seems to have learnt his lesson however, and refused to comment on the decision. Despite throwing everything forward in the second half Scunthorpe were unable to find an equaliser and look to be struggling with the absence of Sharp and Trundle. | | | | 24-06-08, 10:56 PM | #22 (permalink) | | FMF Donator, V.I.P and Writer. Brough secured the 3 month loan deal from Premiership giants Liverpool through a contact in the physiotherapy department at the Merseyside club. It is believed that Brough and Liverpool physio Rob Price met during pre-season at a conference and Brough was tipped off as to the availability of Leto on a short term deal. This move has increased speculation about the future of Ian Morris with many fans seeing this as a defiant move from Brough to replace the want-away winger. IRON OUTFOX THE FOXES Sharp celebrates his second goal of the game Scunthorpe produced a marvellous performance to defeat a Leicester side who might as well have not shown up yesterday. A Billy Sharp brace and a debut goal from Argentine loanee Sebastian Leto propelled the Iron to a fine victory. A mistake by Irish full back Cliff Byrne allowed the foxes to snatch a late consolation goal but with this win the Iron have managed to snap their poor run of away defeats. Sunday 28th October CLASSY WOLVES TEACH IRON A LESSON “Disappointed” was the only thing Iron boss James Brough had to say following his teams defeat at the hands of a resilient Wolves side. Wolves controlled the game from start to finish, had it not been for an inspired performance from Joe Murphy in the Scunthorpe goal then the visiting side could have well walked away 4 or 5 goals to the good. Despite their domination, a single goal decided the game with Stephen Elliott scrambling home the winner from close range after some penalty area chaos on 57 minutes. Seth Johnson returned to action on Wednesday, captaining the reserves to a 3-0 victory. Johnson opened the scoring with a wonder strike which rattled in off the crossbar. Iron manager James Brough was believed to be in the stands keeping an eye on the 28 year old midfielder. LATE SUBSTITUTION PAYS OFF FOR BROUGH Substitute Martin Paterson celebrates after clinching victory for the Iron Scunthorpe travelled to the seaside resort of Blackpool yesterday, but a visit to the Pleasure Beach was the last thing on James Brough’s mind. Aiming to bounce back from a poor midweek performance against Wolves, Brough knew that slipping further down the league was not an option. His worries were eased in the 3rd minute when a Paul Hayes header dropped perfectly onto the right boot of Adam Chambers who volleyed the ball home from 20 yards to a rapturous cheers from the travelling Iron fans. McPhee replied for Blackpool on 28 minutes, a corner from the right bounced around the box before McPhee managed to backheel it past Joe Murphy. As the second half began, the travelling fans were again on their feet, this time as they saw Club captain Seth Johnson emerge from the tunnel and make his way onto the pitch replacing Adam Chambers. His first appearance for the first team after a solid performance on Wednesday for the reserves. With 10 minutes left in the game and neither side looking likely to score, Brough sent on Martin Paterson to replace Paul Hayes who was looking tired. This paid almost instant dividends as nice interplay between Leto and Sharp allowed Paterson to peel off his man and watch Sharp thread the ball behind the defence into his path, Paterson kept his cool and rounded the keeper to slide the ball into an empty net. Brough was jubilant on the touchline, as Paterson saluted the travelling Iron fans waving his shirt above his head and received a yellow card for his trouble. Another away win for the Iron and things are starting to look up. Last edited by Broughy; 24-06-08 at 11:39 PM. | | | | 24-06-08, 11:36 PM | #25 (permalink) | | FMF Donator, V.I.P and Writer. Ferenczi equalised for the Tykes only 5 minutes later but Johnson again put united ahead after half an hour with a vicious strike from the edge of the box. Brough would presumably have settled for a 2-1 lead going into half time but there was plenty more drama before the break as 2 goals from Miguel Mostto propelled Barnsley into the lead. A push on Billy Sharp by Denis Souza on the stroke of half time allowed Paul Hayes to convert an Iron penalty. 3-3 at half time and fans were getting their money worth. The second half left a lot to be desired however with neither side looking as threatening, Brough decided to change things in the latter stages of the match by bringing on young striker Martin Paterson who duly won the game for the Iron at the death, his deflected shot bobbling into the back of the net in the 92nd minute. An inspired substitution and a win for Brough’s men moves the Iron into 14th place in the league. It is being reported that Scunthorpe boss James Brough this week rejected a bid from divisional rivals Bristol City for young left back Marcus Williams, it is thought the bid was somewhere in the region of half a million pounds. Sunday 11th November YOUNG STAR SIGNS NEW CONTRACT Marcus Williams ended speculation linking him with a move away from Glanford Park by agreeing to a two year contract today, details of the contract are undisclosed as is club policy but many are reasoning that his performances this season clearly indicate a large pay rise for the youngster. PALACE TRIP ENDS IN DISAPPOINTMENT Yet another poor result on the road for united this season as Crystal Palace picked up all three points on Tuesday night. The score fails to reflect the fact that the visiting Iron were far the better side on the night. The defeat can perhaps be attributed to the slow start by Brough’s players who found themselves 2-0 down after 25 minutes as a result of Shefki Kuqi beating Joe Murphy twice. The tie turned on 32 minutes when Sharp broke through towards goal only to be tripped by Jose Fonte, the referee awarded a penalty which Sharp dispatched with ease. Unfortunately for the Iron a lack of concentration on the stroke of half time allowed Tom Soares to lose his marker and head in from the back post restoring the two goal lead for Palace. The best goal of the game was unfortunately also the last one, after Seth Johnson switched play with a marvellous 50 yard ball, Kevan Hurst managed to direct it into the path of Martin Paterson who duly fired the ball into the roof of the net. The travelling Iron pressed hard for the remaining 20 minutes in search of a goal but to no avail and the Palace defence stood firm to deny Billy Sharp, Kevan Hurst and then Seth Johnson. Telegraph Star Man - Marcus Williams - He was solid on the left and let nothing past him, also got forward on occasion. Saturday saw Burnley arrive at Glanford Park, hoping to take advantage of the Iron’s poor form but it was the home side who were to come away smiling today. Billy Sharp was a bit fortunate to flick on a Seth Johnson free kick with his head, only to turn and see it loop over Gabor Kiraly in the Burnley goal and cross the line for an unlikely opener before half time. A Johnson free kick again was Burnley’s undoing in the second half and his effort deflected off the wall before finding the net past a stranded Kiraly. Burnley had chances but Murphy was equal to them in the Scunthorpe goal. A solid 2-0 win for Scunthorpe. Young loan signing Jordan Rhodes suffered a broken jaw following an aerial challenge in the match and has been sent back to Ipswich to recover closer to his home, it is expected he will not return this season. Telegraph Star Man - Joe Murphy produced a good display and will be delighted with a clean sheet. Sunday 18th November YOUNG GUNNER SET FOR SCUNTHORPE ? With no games this week, focus falls on James Brough’s attempt to bring in yet another loan signing. The Iron have a long list of players on loan this season at Glanford Park including, Jack Cork (Chelsea), Sebastian Leto (Liverpool), Mamadou Seck and Billy Sharp (Sheff Utd), Tomi Ameobi (Leeds). With the Iron being heavily criticised amongst nationwide press for their surplus of attacking options and lack of defensive strength, Brough has made a positive move to sure up his back four. Young Arsenal full back Kerrea Gilbert, already capped at England U21 level is thought to be on his way to Scunthorpe after Arsenal accepted the 3 month loan offer from the Iron boss. News from the training ground is that Gilbert is being shown around the facilities by united Captain Seth Johnson today, in an attempt to draw the full back to Glanford Park, convincing him that first team football at Scunthorpe would be a good career move. Sunday 25th November Seventh Heaven for United !! ‘Izzy’ Iriekpen and Andy Butler celebrate as the final whistle goes at Glanford Park Early this week, Brough managed to secure the 3 month loan of Arsenal right back Kerrea Gilbert and yesterday he was immediately put into action against Southampton. With only 45 seconds on the clock Gilbert pumped a free kick forward for Kevan Hurst to flick on, the Iron’s leading scorer Paul Hayes was onto it like a rocket in his first game back from injury and fired it in off the post to take an early lead. Gilbert was again involved after 8 minutes when his link up play down the right hand side with Paul Hayes ended in a cross for Billy Sharp to volley home from close range, Southampton were shell shocked and there was worse to come as only 2 minutes later Sharp found himself on the score sheet again, heading a Kevan Hurst cross into the net after losing his marker at the back post. Iron fans were on cloud nine as they extended the lead to 4-0 almost instantly, Hayes bagging his second of the game from A Sebastian Leto cross to the near post. Scunthorpe even managed to make it 5 before half time, Leto using his head to guide the ball into the path of Billy Sharp who completed his hat-trick with a fine left footed finish. The second half started as the first had finished, a goal only one minute after kick off, this time from Leto who drilled the ball from an angle in off the post. This was the kind of result that Scunthorpe could only dream of at the start of the season but it was not a dream, as Iron captain Seth Johnson completed the goal-fest in the 81st minute, smashing home an effort from the edge of the box after Billy Sharp centred the ball for him. 7-0 and the Iron move up to 10th in the Championship table only 6 points from the play off spots. With many pundits conceding that although a fine result the Iron are not expected to stay in the top half for long but fans are hopeful that Brough can steer the side to success. Telegraph Star Man - Billy Sharp thoroughly deserved his hat-trick. | | | | 25-06-08, 06:31 PM | #29 (permalink) | | vBookie Team, Member of the Ozza Family Join Date: Jun 2007 Location: Cheshire Posts: 2,798 Thanks: 654 Thanked 438 Times in 360 Posts Nominated 5 Times in 1 Post TOTW/F/M Award(s): 0 | This is a great story mate! The show must go on however and the Iron players had to put it at the back of their mind as they focussed on the task at hand. The first half fizzled away with only one or two half chances for either side but a more lively Scunthorpe side emerged from the tunnel, and a few minutes in Leto took on his man down the left wing and cut the ball back for captain Seth Johnson to side foot into the goal from about 10 yards. Johnson went from hero to zero in the space of 5 minutes, giving away a penalty which Michael McIndoe smashed into the roof of the net. The game remained 1-1 and Scunthorpe can feel disappointed that they couldn’t make the break through, Brough was surprisingly upbeat however and praised one man in particular. “In the dressing room at half time the lads we’re a bit downhearted, hearing the news about Billy [Sharp] and frustrated at the scoreline so far. Billy limped his way into the dressing room and lifted the spirits of the team by telling them that he would be keeping an eye on the second half, Seth [Johnson] then piped up by telling the rest of the lads that should any of them slack off they’ll be needing to borrow Billy’s crutches!” Brough was impressed with the leadership shown by his players and went on to state “It’s very rare that a manager finds himself lost for words in the dressing room, but Billy’s attitude was superb and I’m proud of the lad”. Telegraph Star Man - Seth Johnson despite giving away a penalty, played well and deserved his goal. IRON STRUGGLE TO FIND A GOAL IN SHARP’S ABSENCE Travelling Scunthorpe fans were disappointed after a dismal performance in front of goal, with many fearing the absence of Billy Sharp could spell a slip down the league table. Charlton found themselves facing the Iron at the ideal time and capitalized early through an Izale McLeod header on 17 minutes. Lloyd Sam found the net 10 minutes later and despite heavy spells of attacking possession, Scunthorpe we’re unable to find the net which can be attributed to a terrific performance from Nicky Weaver in the Charlton goal. Sunday 9th December LATE PENALTY DRAMA AT CARROW ROAD Scunthorpe players pay tribute to the travelling Iron fans Iron manager James Brough may be struggling with the injury to star striker Billy Sharp but he certainly has no hesitation in gambling on a short term replacement. A rare start for Tomi Ameobi, on loan from Leeds United may have surprised many fans but with 5 minutes left in the game and no goals against a tricky Norwich side, Ameobi burst clear of the defence with a powerful run, finding his way into the area and about to pull the trigger, he was unceremoniously brought down from behind by Ryan Shackell, and the referee instantly awarded a penalty. Shackell was lucky to get away with just a yellow card for his awfully timed lunge. Travelling Scunthorpe supporters fell silent as Paul Hayes readied himself to take the spot kick, knowing his record this season is less than impressive. Hayes looked hesitant as he began his run up but he was leading the celebrations when he saw his bottom corner effort hit the back of the net and securing a vital away victory for Scunthorpe who were able to hold on until the end to win 1-0. Telegraph Star Man - Paul Hayes, kept his composure to convert a late penalty END OF THE ROAD FOR GREGORY AT GLANFORD PARK John Gregory will awake this morning in the knowledge that Glanford Park was the last stadium he visited as Coventry manager. The former Aston Villa manager was sacked following a 3-0 drubbing by the Iron yesterday, and judging by the sheer domination by Brough’s team, it might well have been a good decision by the Coventry board. Pre-season signing David Van Zanten did his manager no favours by nodding the ball past his own goalkeeper after only 4 minutes, a good delivery by Kerrea Gilbert forcing the error from the Scottish full back. Seth Johnson continued his good form by doubling the lead before half time and on loan Argentinian winger Sebastian Leto completed the demolition in the 52nd minute, first to react to a Paul Hayes effort which came back off the post. Two wins in a week for Brough, suggesting that things are looking up for the inexperienced manager, the same cannot be said for Gregory however. | | | | 28-06-08, 02:30 PM | #35 (permalink) | | FMF's Toon Army Spiderman and member of the Writers Crew Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: wiltshire Posts: 2,717 Thanks: 316 Thanked 684 Times in 654 Posts Nominated 0 Times in 0 Posts TOTW/F/M Award(s): 0 | Hahaha great update again, unlucky on Billy Sharp.
