Peterhead FC

I was just settling down with my wife to watch some saturday night television at about 9 o'clock when the phone rang. It was a man with a very deep scottish accent, he explained the reason for his call and it turned out he was the chairman of Peterhead Football Club. He wanted me to meet one of his representatives at a resteraunt downtown at 10:30. At first i thought it was a joke but i got ready and drove down nevertheless.

I got there at about 10:20, waiting for me was a Scottish man with red hair and a long beard. We ordered some food and had a brief chat. When the meals arrived he pulled a contract out of his bag and slid it across the table to me. He said "Read it and sign the dotted line" in his deep voice. It took me a good 5 minutes to read it as it was very detailed and had everything in it such as accomodation, travel and even childcare! We don't even have kids! I rung my wife to make sure it was all ok, and surprisingly she wanted to move to Scotland! I signed the contract, shook the mans hand and drove home. Who would of thought that i could become a manager in the space of a couple of hours?

I got home at about 11:40 and the wife was still up waiting to congratulate me and see the contract. We immediately went on the internet to browse the many houses that Peterhead chairman Roger Morrison had given us to choose from. In the end we decided on a property just outside of Peterhead with 4 rooms incase we have friends or family round.

Our new house

I was still wondering why Peterhead would want to hire someone like me, hardly any managerial experience. Only an unsuccesful stint with non-league Vauxhall Motors. Anyway, it's done. They've hired me and i should just look forward now. In just a week i will be the new manager of Peterhead in Scotland. I'll have to tell my family soon, i'll leave that til the morning.

17th August 2007

We are going to leave tomorrow so we can get to grips with what Peterhead is like and get used to the weather. But first, before we pack, we need to ring our families and tell them of the good news. They don't even know yet!

After i finally got up the chairman rang me and he was delighted that i'd signed the contract. He asked me when i'd be coming up to Peterhead and where we would be living. Whether this is a good thing or not, we will be living just a few minutes away from him. He said there will be a surprise waiting for us at our house.

I contacted the poperty owners of the current house and told them we were leaving. I rung my family and went round to my Mums to say goodbye in person, the day went very fast as i sorted out my personal life!

My Vectra

18th August 2007

So we had said goodbye, packed our stuff and were on our way to a new life and a new job. I prayed that i wouldn't mess it up. It took us a good few hours to get to Peterhead to start with, and a few more hours to find the house. But we got there in the end. Walking down the path i could hear voices, i thought either this is the wrong house or we're being robbed in broad daylight, i walked round the corner and to our shock, standing there was Roger (Chairman), all the players, all the staff and a brand new Audi TT with a ribbon on top. It showed me the family feeling amongst the players and it helped me settle in. I had a chat with the players, in paticular the captain, Bobby Mann and the vice-captain, Jamie Buchan, who welcmoed me to the club and introduced me to the rest of the players and staff. I immediately noticed that there were no scouts and only one coach. That's not enough for me, i like to have a lot of people around me, but what do i know?

My new car

Something that i didn't know was that the season had already started and we were 2 games in and bottom of the league! I left the wife at home to unpack and settle in while i checked out the stadium and the training facilities and had a chat with Neale Cooper, our assistant manager. He spoke to me about the squad, saying that we will need to strengthen in midfield and get a new goalkeeper, our best player is Rory McAllister, who is on loan from Inverness. My coach, who is acting as a scout too reccomended a few players for me to have a look at, but i'm not making any decisions until i see the lads train.

Our training facilities are pretty good, better than i expected anyway. The training pitch is in good quality and we have the essential, such as cones etc. The stadium is in good nick, holding 3700. I doubt we are getting anywhere near filling that at the moment.

The lads

PRESS CONFERENCE

Live from Balmoor Stadium

Worrall
Morrison
Media

Media: First of all, welcome back to football and welcome to Peterhead. What do you think you can achieve with the Blue Toon?

Worrall: I want to get this team promoted in my time here. I don't know what we have to work with here as i only just arrived today, but it's all good so far.

Media: Roger, why did you pick Daniel for the job?

Morrison: I'm a keen follower of low-league English football, and although looking at Daniel's record at Vauxhall it looks like he is a poor manager. He got the players out there giving 100 percent, and that's what we've been lacking in recent seasons.

Media: Daniel, were you surprised when you got the call?

Worrall: Surprised! I almost fell off my chair! I didn't think i'd find a way back into football, and especially not with a club like Peterhead!

Media: We have heard that you have been given a budget of around 15k to buy players with, what do you make of this?

Worrall: I don't have a clue how much i've been given, but if it's anywhere around that amount i will be delighted. On the way up here i've looked at a few players, but only on the internet.

Media: Roger, where do you expect the club to be at the end of the season?

Morrison: This season, we are just looking to stay in this division, then we can build from there. We've had an awful start and i'm sure we can get out of this mess soon enough.

Media: Ok, that'll be all for now. Thanks for talking to us and good luck for the rest of the season!

I think Roger was pleased with how the press conference went, and so was i. I've only just found this out but we are playing Queen of South tomorrow! If we can get anything out of that game i will be delighted, i will have to get the lads in early tomorrow for a training session so i can actually pick the team! I might leave the team selection to my assistant for this game though.

19th August 2007
MATCH DAY

Today was my first match, we were playing 6th placed Queen's Park, i've just finished watching my players train and i'm surprised at the quality of players we have here. But i also noticed how small the squad is. We can't even field a full 16 men, only 15 because we have 2 men injured. I was impressed with captain Bobby Mann, and the way he knew all the players and almost took over the training session and also on loan striker Rory McAllister.

Here is my first squad;

We will need to strengthen in order to reach our goal of survival.

Kick off - 15:00

Pre match interview;
Media: What are you expecting from this game?
Worrall: Anything would be good, we don't have a full squad, i've only been here a day. It'll be hard.

Peterhead kicked off and within 5 minutes Queen's Park player Alan Trouten took a knock after Mackay's hard challenge. He continued nevertheless. In the 10th minute, Good and Mann exchanged a few passes before Mann knocked it forward for Bagshaw who passed it to Robertson. Robertson advanced on the wet surface and played a lovely long ball to McAllister who took it past Ure and buried it in the bottom corner! 1-0 to Peterhead! QP's Wilcox swung the ball in after 15 minutes but only as far as Mackay who cleared it to team mate Keith, he squared it to Bagshaw who played it to Robertson. He slid it to Keith on the edge of the box then he knocked it through to McAllister! One-on-one McAllister vs Murray! Saved! Grant cleared it to Little, Little with a low pass to Trouten. Trouten! Fine save from Duggan! Bagshaw picked up a yellow card after 23 minutes as we started to look inferior to Queen's Park. 28 minutes in Robertson was almost punished by Little for keeping hold of the ball for too long as his shot fizzed wide. Nothing much else happened and we went in at the break 1-0 to the good.

At the break i encouraged the players to continue attacking as we know what they can do on the break and i brought Englishman Steve Istead on to replace the tired Martin Bavidge.

Queen's Park got the game underway and were immediately on the attack as the ball pinballed around our area it finally fell to Dunn, who unleashed a fierce shot towards our goal. Everyone thought it was in but Robert Duggan had other ideas, he pulled off a stunning save, tipping it over the bar for a corner. The corner was poor and easily dealt with by Jamie Buchan. We got a corner at the other end after 54 minutes, Mackay took it and knocked it to the edge of the box to transfer listed Ian Good. He sliced it over the bar. After 62 minutes, Robertson picked up a knock and was replaced by Hamish Munro. Mackay's corner after 65 minutes went to the feet of Istead at the near post, he swivveled and knocked it to Buchan on the edge of the box. Buchan picked his spot and placed it in the bottom corner! 2-0 to Peterhead! Just a minute later Duggan was forced into another magnificent save. With 5 minutes remaining, Marino Keith was replaced by Donald. On the 90 minute mark Queen's Parks Grant scored a 25 yard beauty to give them a chance. 1 minute later, Ferry dribbled it into the box and knocked it over for Carroll. Frankie Carroll bundled it over the line! 2-2! 2 goals in 2 minutes for Queen's Park! That was the final score.

I sympathised with the lads after the match, we gave it our all and a lapse of concentration in the last few minutes cost us the 3 points in the end. Great result nevertheless.

Rory McAllister

Post match interview;
Media: What do you make of todays game?
Worrall: It was a fantastic match, great for the viewers. We played brilliantly and deserved the point, although we could have had all 3 had we not lost our concentration in the last few minutes.

I opened up my laptop after the game and had 2 e-mails from clubs about Dean Cowie. There was an enquiry about the player from Carnoustie, i replied saying i would accept 1k for the player, and i accepted a bid of 1k from East Stirlingshire for him.

Dean Cowie

I recieved a call from Roger Morrison congratulating me on my first game and the clubs first point of the season. He also told me that we were still bottom, but only on goal difference as Brechin had scored more than us.

Next we face top of the table Airdrie United, they have yet to concede a goal let alone lose a match. Let's cause an upset!
