Rory McAllister! I remember him from one of my old games. Signed him along with prunty. Pretty decent strikers for lower leagues. I got dressed quickly and excitedly and began the ten minute journey to the training ground. I parked up and smelled the sweet Scottish summer air as i walked into the training ground. The sun was shining bright and there was a nice breeze in the air. The staff were there waiting for me to see how i wanted the training pitch set up for when the lads arrived. I decided, as it was my first proper training session, that i would put a little fitness course together to see if these lads were fit enough to play the whole season. There won't be much rotation as i'm working with such a small squad so i had to get these players in top shape. The Essentials Most of the players completed the course with ease, but there was a few, keeper Jim Will and Bobby Mann in paticular, who struggled throughout and completed it much slower than the rest of the players. We had a match for the 2nd half of the training session, and this allowed Bobby to come out of his shell and prove his defensive ability more than makes up for his lack of speed. Jim Will, i don't think is the sort of keeper i am looking for. I hoped that there was a goalkeeper or 2 on David McGinlay's list that i could look at for backup to Robert Duggan who was truly spectacular against Queen of South and was outstanding in the training session too as his team won 3-1 against vice-captain Jamie Buchans side. There was no arguments at all during the game which i was quite impressed with and Bobby Mann, after the game turned everything that looked like turning into an argument, into laughter. After training i went to my office, as requested by coach/scout David McGinlay. He handed me a list consisting of many players of varying age, positions and price. One name stood out to me the most though, Cardiff winger Kevin Cooper. He is 32 and very experienced, he's pretty fast too considering his age. This list had everything, detalied descriptions of the players strengths, weaknesses etc. There was only 4 or 5 names on the list that were to buy. The rest were about loaning the players. The most notable were Stephen Ward, Garry Wood, Ryan McGowan and Hjalmar Porarinnson. I realised how much of an asset this member of staff was to me. This club meant so much to him after his playing career at Peterhead was ended at the age of 23 when he broke his leg. He wasn't a particularly outstanding footballer but he was determined. I thanked David for taking the time out of his schedule to do this for me without me even requesting it off him. Then i offered him a new contract, without even thinking about it. He was on 100 pounds a week and his contract ended at the end of the season. I offered him a four year contract worth 130 pounds a week. He accepted it straight away. So i had made my first change to the backroom staff. Later that evening i offered a spanish scout a contract of 100 pound a week which he needs time to think about. Tomorrow i have an interview with a man from Peterhead's official website which will give me a chance to get closer to the fans. | | | | 15-03-08, 04:51 PM | #30 (permalink) | | Important First Team Player Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Knaresborough Posts: 506 Thanks: 945 Thanked 357 Times in 282 Posts Nominated 11 Times in 3 Posts TOTW/F/M Award(s): 1 | Love the training ground touch, nice and detailed, and still fantastic!
