i use polygonal lasso, same system, just instead of having the player filled in or somethin (i just dont like the pen tool
), it just cuts
and for the players i use this system:
After Cutting, use lasso tool with 25px feathering and loosely outline the player, then create a layer mask, right click it, and press apply layer mask
duplicate this layer 4 times, so you have 5 layers in total
now i use james m's render settings (mostly)
top layer: soft light 80%
second layer: color dodge 21%
third layer: overlay 37%
fourth layer: filter>blur>smart blur (3px on top, 25px on bottom), normal 65-95%, depends on how it looks :P
bottom layer: gaussian blur - 10-12px, normal 100%
i like the way your tut has the pixellation around it
