I find it effective for away games to play more width & faster tempo with direct passes.
You may also want to tick the counter attack.
As for defending deeper or higher up the pitch, it's pretty much dependent on your defender's acceleration/pace & the strikers that are against you. If they are slow, you can man mark them with no problems.
As for me, I have Vidic(Zonal Mark) & Ferdinand(Man Mark) pushing higher up the field(in order to press the opponents back) with offside trap & counter attack ticked. Reason for Zonal Mark for Vidic is due to his slower speed & Man Mark for Ferdinand for his higher speed.
Of cos, all these are related to how good your team is.(I still have no idea which team your using)
Hope that helps![]()

the team i am using is notts county i got them promoted which is very easy cause they have loads of money but in league 1 i am struggling
if i m not wrong, in lower league management, you need to play with a more direct passing with slower tempo & narrower width & deeper back line.
bros, please correct me if i am wrong.

when playing in narrow pitchs i advice you to use short passing, a good playmaker for mixed passing and a center back with high passing who can play the ball direcly to your midfield. the problem is that defenders who can make perfect connection between defense and midfield are expensive and rare.
try to set the passing to your defenders to long, midfielders and forwards to short so you can create good chances thru high possesion of the ball. don't use wingers, use a playmaker and two strikers.

in the first try having two diferent strikers, a fast one with high off-the-ball and a really powerful striker with high physical aspects backing up by a classic number 10 who arrives in the opposition area late and has a good long shot ability.
in the second maybe pacey AMCs (aguero style) who can play as forwards and do the wings along with your best "matador" as ST.
play slow tempo, short pass and BE AWARE that you'll have to possess proper DMC\MCs to try killer balls often.
there's a lot of options mate just try the ones that fit best with your style of play
good luck.
The better you perform in a league, the more defensive and counter attacking the AI teams will play against you. This usually results in some games (most of them away) where you have like 15 shots on target and they have 2 and you lose 1:2.
Against a really tough defense with hard tackling it is very difficult to play, you need to play very offensive and try to create many standards, be it free kicks, corners, penalties.
If you are on the other hand more afraid of losing, you can try to use a defensive 4-3-3, wide, direct, quick, and counter-attacking (GK, DL DC DC DR, DMC, MC MC, AML AMR, deep lying ST/FC). This often gets results like the above mentioned, you win very close, but with far less shots.
I personally have found that offensive systems are better over time, because you get 3 points for a win but only 1 for a draw, so I will use only offensive systems in league games.
In the lower leagues, I personally would only use two systems depending on weather, both standard 442, they just seem to work almost every time for me. Make sure to watch the full match if you have problems, this will probably instantly tell you what exactly is the problem in your team. If only one or two positions usually get bad ratings that will give you a hint on where to look for changes.![]()
