Having used these tactics with a number of teams in a number of leagues, at different levels and in different countries, I thought I would present them for your perusal.
Background I've been playing the CM/FM series from day one and have always managed to do well with whatever team I play, wherever league or country I play.
I've always had a preference for 4-4-2 based formations, but always make adjustments to the team & player instructions to suit both the "style" of play I want to see on the pitch and the players I have at my disposal.
The 4-4-2 themed formations I've used have always been based upon a flat back four, midfield with an AMC role, DMC role, with wingers, along with a linking FC and an out and out striker.
GRANADA Fiora2 Variant First of all, I'll make no claims that this is a "super tactic" or "DIABLO-esque", as in FM08 I don't believe such a thing exists.
The tactics I'll present do seem to work well at with a variety of teams, levels and countries I've used them. As always though, please tweek them to suit YOUR players and the roles YOU want the players to perform.
The tactics are besed upon an attractive passing style with reasonably high tempo, whilst by using creative freedom sparingly, the team tends to stick to my game-plan and therefore defensively things are tight. Shorter passing makes for higher possession as the ball isn't given away often.
If you have any comments on the tactics, feel free. Please, no flaming or "it's crap" type posts though, they're not constructive. If it's not working for you, then say so by all means, but try to look at why you think it's not working. Myself and others who like these tactics can probably help you get the most by suggesting changes or players that work well.
The Formation
As you can see, a normal 4-4-2, but with considerable use of "farrows" & "barrows".
Team Instructions
This is what I use, but can obviously be adapted to your own preferences.
Individual Player Instructions
As with any individual player settings, they can be adapted to suit whatever players you have at your disposal. Common sense prevails here. Look for player attributes that are ideally suited to each playing position or "role" and you will always get the best out of any tactics.
For example, if your centre-backs aren't particularly good at passing or other technical attributes, frop their "Try Through Balls" to "Rarely". Only have "Long Shots" set on players with at least 15 long shots, plus a player preferred move that ties with this, such as "tris long shots" or "shoots with power".
Where I've Played With These Tactics England - All levels. Prem down to BSN/BSS
Spain - All Levels. La Liga down to Segunda B (1,2,3,4)
MLS - Only the one level, but East and West.
Scotland - All levels. Prem down to Third.
China - First & Second.
Brazil - All levels & state championships.
General Guidelines This relates mostly to the level you're playing. At the higher levels and with the best players, short passing/higher tempo should always work well, as the players can handle what would seem to be a contradictory style. At lower levels, with lesser quality players, I might suggest looking at more "direct" play, with a reduced tempo, as you might find that your players can lose possession.
There we go then, the tactics are there. Give it a whirl and let me know how you get on.
