Club: Santos Laguna. Position: Striker. Value: £1.3m. Contract: 30.06.09 on £9,000 p/w. Age: 25 years old. Nationality: Argentina. Languages: Spanish, Italian, English (basic). Reputation: National. Personality: Balanced. Squad status: Indispensable to the club. Preferred foot: Right. Matías Vuoso began his career in Argentina with Independiente. Playing alongside Diego Forlán, Vicente scored seven goals in 29 games for Independiente in 2000-01, and another seven in 35 games in 2001-02. He left the club in June 2002 to sign with English club Manchester City, joining for £3.5 million. However, Vuoso was quite unsuccessful with Manchester City, not appearing in a single game, and was loaned out to Santos Laguna for the 2003-04 season. Despite moving to a league with less prestige than the EPL, in the beginning of his stay in Mexico, Vuoso was faced with the same problems at Santos Laguna than he was at Manchester City. Coming to a club that already boasted an impressive attack that featured Chilean playmaker Rodrigo Ruiz and legendary Mexican striker Jared Borgetti, Vuoso was exclusively played as a substitute during the first part of the Apertura 2003 season. As fate would have it however, Vuoso was thrown into the starting mix when Borgetti suffered a minor injury that required a two week absence from the pitch. Vuoso scored in both of the games he started in place of Borgetti and subsequently convinced Santos manager Luis Fernando Tena, who awarded Vuoso a starting job. After Borgetti's exit from Santos Laguna following the Clausura 2004 season, Vuoso became Santos Laguna's main goalscoring threat and teammate Rodrigo Ruiz's primary target for his lethal passes. Vuoso exploded with 11 goals in 17 games for Santos in the Apertura 2004 campaign and then followed that up with 16 goals in 19 games the following season. All in all, Vuoso's successful stay at Santos produced 57 goals in 102 games for the "Warriors of the Santos Laguna" before his move to Club América in May 2006. Vuoso was bought by Santos again after Clausura 2007 for an undisclosed amount of money. Upom his return a drastic loss of form kept Vuoso on the bench. Vuoso has become a natuarlized Mexican citizen. Upon receiving his citizenship in Mexico, Vuoso clearly stated that if Hugo Sanchez, coach of the Mexico National Football Team, ever needed a striker, Vuoso would be more than honored to wear the famous green shirt and help win for the country that has given him a home. Vuoso seems to fit in well with any bunch of players. He has a tremendous amount of pace and gets out of the blocks quickly, which also helps. Consistancy is also another one of his top aspects. He is also one of the best finishers in the game. Almost natural, abit like a certain former Liverpool number 9. His off the ball positioning isn't something to be ignored either. He seems to be a perfectly intellegent player on the field. There doesn't seem to be any outstanding weaknesses for a striker. He's never going to be a leader for your team but that doesn't really matter when you've got ten other players on the park. Despite all of the positives, I don't think this player is Premier League material. The only team he'd make a difference with is Derby. He'd be an awesome Championship player as well. He'd only cost you between £1.5m & £3m at the start of the game, which is cheap for a striker. Being brutally honest, I think there's better choices out there for EPL teams but I would definately attempt to get him if I'm in the Championship. Plus he'd be extremely interested to back into English football.
