Foster was spotted by Alex Ferguson, playing for Wrexham, on loan from Stoke, when the Man Utd manager was watching his son, Darren, in the LDV Vans Trophy Final in 2005, which Wrexham won. Manchester United had been struggling for many years to replace goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel, and Ferguson decided to move for the young Foster – paying £1 million. He joined Manchester Utd from Stoke Cityon 19 July '05. Between 2005 and 2007, he was on loan to Watford. Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd has claimed that "he's better than current Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar" and believes that "he is going to be the best goalkeeper in the world." Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has suggested that Foster will succeed Edwin Van Der Sar as first-choice keeper at United and should eventually replace Paul Robinson as "England's next goalkeeper." Foster had an impressive season at Watford, attracting plaudits from opponents and commentators. In Football Manager '08 Foster is at Man United in FM ’08 and still an understudy to Van Der Sar. He would be considered number 3 but in my opinion is a lot better than the current number 2 Tomasz Kuszczak. I have seen himbought by big clubs like Man City and Aston Villa so if you want him move sharply. Utd’s number 2 Kuszczak soon becomes disalusioned as an understudy to Van Der Sar and will hand in a transfer request which will make it harder to entice Foster from the grip of Utd Tactical Instructions He is a goalkeeper ………… play him in between the posts ! Strengths This keeper can go on to be one of the best in FM, if you buy him early he can be got at a relevantly cheap price. I rate him higher than the likes of Carson or K Schmeichel. His strengths are his reliability, consistency and command of his area. Overall a great goalkeeper who would fit well in most European sides Weakness's If I had to pick one and name one, well he can be a little injury prone. This could be detrimental to any side who have Foster as a number one. Generally his injuries can see him out for up to two months. If you do have Foster as a number one, make sure you have a bloody good number 2. Conclusion I genuinely believe this is a keeper for most teams. I am not suggesting if you have a Frey, Buffon, Reina etc between the posts, to sell them but if you are chasing the big teams and want a reliable keeper, go get Foster | League Champions 1951/52, 1954/55, 1955/56, 1989/90, 1995/96, 1996/98, 1998/99, 2001/02 Runners-Up 1960/61, 1987/88 F.A.I.
