Default Newbie Questions

Hello all, just downloaded the game and have been having fun for the last few days. Couple questions though...

1. What team do you put your whizkids in? I scoured this site yesterday for young talents and got a few of them (Bostock, Zola, Amoo etc). I put them in the Reserve team but was wondering if they should go into the U-18 team and what developmental impact the player has based on the team they are in. Also do they automatically get games and how can I follow their development and know when they will be ready for primetime?

2. Transfers. Why do I have to pay out of the a** for everyone but when I go to sell players nobody buys them at their value? Its like you have to offer 25-50% more then their value to buy and sell at a 25% devaluation.

Also, are their any secrets to negotiating or bidding? At the start of the game ive been setting the dealine always at "tomorrow" so I get quick responses and can take action without dragging out the process and wasting time on players who dont want to sign for the club anyway, even after meeting the clubs requirments. (Flamini you P.O.S)

3. Permits. What determines whether a permit will or wont go through? What do you do with players that cant get a permit? Im assuming the deal is nixed since I had Zarate signed and sealed but the permit didnt go through and his name was nowhere to be found on my roster.

4. What does qualify for the continental cup mean? Does that mean qualify for the Champions League or Uefa Cup? I was playing as Tott and I would have liked to had the 35m transfer budget as opposed to the 28m but I was not sure what cup that was and was almost sure I could not make a CL spot in one year but confident I could make a UEFA spot.

5. What determines a players mood? Defoe through 4 games has 4 goals, 1 assist, and I just gave him a contract extension with increased wages but his mood was listed as poor. What gives?

6. If I focus soley on transfers to build the team and winning games, how much micromanaging is neccesary in the other areas?

7. Condition. What is the condition level that you pull players out of the game or dont start to begin with? In preseason I made a sub everytime a player got to 70-72% or below. I also didnt start anyone with less then 88% fitness going in. What are the cutoffs you guys use? Also, even if I keep them in those fitness levels, do they still need gakes off every once in a while to avoid injury or can you safely play them as long as they are at comfortable condition levels?

8. First team squad size. How many players do you guys keep on the first team? Being that you can only start 11 and have 5 subs, I had about another 10-12 players on my first team plus a couple injured guys. How can I keep some of these players happy if they will not be getting games or even on the bench? In my mind I made the point of trying to build a team with a competant backup for each position but I dont see how you can keep them active anyway.

9. What effect does talking to the press have? (or commenting on other players)

Thanks in advance guys!

1. I usually put any 17+ players in the reserves, that way they are playing with and against more experienced players so they can learn from them, also its more competitive. Well you can go into the preferences thing in the game and untick the box that says - Assistants picks reserves/youth (whichever one you have put them in) then you can pick the team yourself so you can play them when you want I'm not sure about knowing when they are ready, i usually send my players on loan when they reach 20 for a season if i can, and then put them in the first team the next season.

2. I think that is just part of the game, sometimes you can sweeten the deal with extra clauses and exchanged players (Sometimes agents say if the club your buying from needs someone from a certain position). Also if you have a good relationship with the manager you are buying from you are more likely to get a lower offer accepted.y buys them at their value? Same with selling, i think it is to make the game more challenging.

3. For a permit to go through i think the player has too of played 75% of his internationals for his country in the two years before the application. Also i think his international team must regularly make the top 70 in the world rankings. And if you can't get a permit, you can appeal, and if the appeal doesnt work then i guess you can't buy that player, or you can wait until he meets the requirements?

4. Dont know about the continental cup, i always thought that was the euro's or the african nations cup, etc. Think it might be any cup that doesnt just haveenglish (or whatever nationality the club your managing is) clubs in.

5. Well, a good team-talk can do wonders to a players mood, also if he has played well then media appraisal will make his mood better. I think if you have players that are that players favoured personnel on your team that helps too. Defoe might have a poor moral because of the old manager being replaced with a new unknown one, in which case you'll have to win him over ;)

6. I'd say quite a bit really, on the tactics, training, looking over the youth & reserve teams, they are all just as important as transfers in my eyes.

7. Well i dont like picking players with less than 90% to start myself, if someones conditions like 75-90% i usually start them on the bench and let them play the second half. I think you can safely play them if they are in comfortable condition levels and if theyre status isnt in need of a rest, or slightly jaded or anything else like that.

8. I have my first 11, my 5 subs. normally have everyone else playing in the reserve squad and just call players up if i need them to replace someone, or just want to let them have a game.

9. Well if you make a good comment about a manager, that managers more likely to accept any transfer offers you have for his players. Talking to the press can also higher or lower your players morale, so make sure you say the good things :)

Hope i helped

1) I tend to put them in U18 until the age of around 17/18, stick them in reserves until around 20, unless they're really good. Sending them on loan at around 20/21...a good training schedule helps. Checking their stats now and then is a good idea.

2) Because its PC. The computer isn't human mate. Kind of annoying but you're gonna have to stick to it. As for secrets..I know one but its more of a cheat and its temporary, called the 40mil Cheat.

3) Work permits apply to Non Eu Nationality players. To earn a permit, they have to play for their national football team for a certain amount of time in a year ( i forgot, something like 60% or whatever) Sometimes they already joined but you can't use him until he gets a permit, so send him to a Belgium club (I dont actually know how that work since I always sign a player who has a permit)

4) You said it yourself, it means you qualify for a cup in Europe.

5) Morale depends on your team talk, the pressure from media, their reaction to situations and stuff like that. It'll go back up after a few more games.

6) Buying players isn a part of Fm but not the biggest. Making tactics, spending time looking at opposition, training, scouting, everything works together in order for you to get the best out of a team

7) Rest players now and then, and check your training schedule, My players are always 93%+ except for injured players.

8) Thats the most difficult part of the game, keeping players happy. I normally have around 25 players, and I sometime rotate when I see theyre about to feel unhappy. Its annoying because you want to keep the same players every match but you want your whole squad to stay.

9) Depends. It may worsen your players attitude towards the next game or make it better. Commenting on your own players, show that you could be pleased, or unhappy with him. Commenting about other teams, may anger their players depending on what you say.

Current Game:
None until Fm09 comes out

i dont want one with the current transfers (ie Deco at Chels) just the one with Jan transfers (Woodgate/Hutton etc at Tott)

i tried your link for the digital download and it was an incorrect link. i looked at it and it was going through SIgames, which for some reason doesnt work. ive tried to update the game by opening the game and clicking "update" but it goes to their site and says its not avialable.

btw i have Worldwide Soccer Manager 08, and I downloaded it via Sega's website. Can I try the "boxed" version or is that for people that have a hard copy of it (im assuming so)

btw, how do you find the pdf version of the manual for the game? I cant find it either.

Im having problems winning and getting results in the prem.

I use Tott and generally my starting 11 is...

Huntelaar up top.
Keane justbehind and off his flank
Bale - Huddlestone - Vander Vaart - Bent for mymidfield
Gilberto - Koubul - Woodgate - Hutton for the back line (im in Dec and King is justabout back)
Robinson at keeper

I have Arshavin (he's been horrible so far), Lennon, Zokora, Dawson and Cerny on the bench.

How can you best use Vander Vaart and Arshavin? Do they have to play above the midfield (more forwardly placed) to be effective or do you set the line for them to run forward? Under Vaart i give him freedom to roam and put his mentality to attack. He did very well early againsteasy comp but he hasnt gotten a goal or assist in 10-12 games. Arshavin hasnt scored me a goal ALL year.

The Jan window is approaching im thinking of going after possibly Downing on the left side (move Bale back to LB and use Gilberto as a sub)/ Im also considering cover at DC (King and Woodgate are as sturdy as glass chandeliers) or possibly a new keeper. Id like to get some balls in the center of midfield later, maybe a Mikel or Flamini.

Anyways, im losing to bad teams in the prem and cant figure out whywhen my lineup is much better then theopposition. Ive donevery well in all the cups (im in the Carling cup semi-s, UEFA cup KO stages and FA Cup quarters) but myteam is very inconsistent in the prem. I have a very easy run of things in Jan but i need to getmax points toget the board off my back. They say they are pleased with my signings but not my prem results. (inconsiderate pricks, i can get the mini treble and survive relagtion)

great game though.

When that happens to me I tend to go back to basics mate, A 4-4-2 with a normal setting on all the tactics.

It could be you tweaked the tactic, lost, tweaked it again, lost again then tweaked it some more and now you've confused all the players.

ill try that...

my last seven games have been better somewhat. ive won 2, lost 1, drawn 4

my problem is my defense. my back line of gilberto, king, woodgate and hutton should be getting a clean sheet here or there and not letting team like Fulham and Wigan nick silly shots late.

during the jan window I bought Downing (hurt for 6 weeks), Borre, Marcelo Grohe and some youngsters Zola and Kjaer.

question. should i start Grohe right now over Robo? His stats seem about equal but im wondering if i should stick with robo until next year. also, should i be looking for another GK as a backup to Grohe and dump Robo and Cerby as soon as possible or keep Robo as Grohes backup?

I just cant get Vaart or Arshavin into the games. Arshavin wants a transfer but i denied it in Jan. Id like to get them both hot but i cant figure out where the need to be. Ive tried them frwardly placed in the midfield with free roll and full creative options, ive tried them in standard midfield positions with them making forward runs. nothing seems to get these guys goals or assists. the only person who scores for me is Huntelaar. He is a freak but it not hard to get him goal you just have to put him up top and crank his mentality to attack.

More then anything though the above mentioned defensive lapses are killing me. I may get a goal or maybe two lead on weak competition but then late theyll start nicking weak shite. 3 of the above mentioned draws came as a result of late goals against Fulham, Wigan and Derby!

tried the rest to normal tactic, had a goal lead for most of the game and watch Bolton nip one late for a draw. jeez my defense keeps letting me down, but i dont know why. thats a solid group i have there.

gave borre his firststart he appeared to have played well. i think im going to move him up into a sweeper position and see if i cant get a clean sheet next match.

hello guys, finished my first season. i ended up 11th in the prem after a miraculous three game run against Chelsea, Liverpool and United. i won all three games! the first one was against Chelsea. fearing a massive drubbing i configured a 5-4-1 scheme....

gilberto, king, koboul, woodgate, borre at the back left to right

bale, huddlestone, vaart and hutton at mid

and huntelaar up top but just barely above the midfield.i set it to counterattack and after falling behind 1-nil against Chels, Huntelaar lit them up for 3 goals in the scond half. i usedthe same tactic the next game for Liverpool and won 2-0 with a goal froont Huntelaar and Vaart. United went up 1-nil and i equalized with Arshavin filling in for an injured varrt, fell behind again from a flecther bomb but then ran off two goals with Huntelaar after increasing the team mentality to all out and tempo quick still using the 5-4-1.

im assuming the board is going to keep me because im in June and looking for transfers. anywho i have more questions now and any help is appreciated.

1. Milan are willing to pay 17 million for Bale. I only have 22 million in transfer funds and i need to rasie that considerably to upgrad my team but Bale is providing vital cover on the left for Downing and Gilberto. is that good value for Bale or should i keep him? im leaning towards nixing the deal and keeping him.

2. my sell list right now is Lennon, ottoku , dawson, robinson and possibly bent, but Bent has been my first choice right winger most of the season. bent is listed at 31 million in value but i dont think anyone is interestedat the price. if I can sell him for 15 million is there anyone in that range that is a good dedicated right winger? I can use borreand hutton as a backup but id hate to sell bent without getting a uality upgrade at the position.

3. how long do King and Woodgate stay playing well? they were pretty solid when healthy and paired up. what im wondering is should i be going after a quality backup and dump Dawson, or should i sell either one of them and try to bring in a stud? their age and injury seem to be a concern, but if they stay productive for a few more years maybe I can focus on other areas in the shorterm.

4. Vander Vaart and Arshavin. Arshavin wants a trade because he doesnt get a ton of first team inutes. problem is I have no idea how to maximize either of their talents. Arshavin scored me 3 goals all year and Vaart only 4. Im not sure where to put them or how to configure their tactics. Problem with unloading Arshavin is his value is only 10 million, meaning i might be able to sell him for 8, and there is nobody i can bring in for that price with his upside.

5. holding midfielders. why wont Chelsea git rid of Mikel? lol Ive offered 22 million for him so I could have a young strong defensive mid to eat up the middle of the pitch but they wont budge. Flamini's stats are not anywhere near Mikel's and Arsenal will only sell at 16 million. is he good on the game or worth the money?

6. Marcelo Grohe. I bought him after seeing someone reccomend him as a keeper. He did much better then Robinson but is he a legit first team keeper for 5-6 years or should i look to upgrade and keep him as a backup? Lloris demands 27 million when i bid on him. Ben Foster could be mine now for 16 million. Should I bother with paying 16 for Foster or should I hold what i have with Grohe and get a cheap backup?

thanks again, ill be back with more later.
