Can somebody help me? I've been playing the championship/football manager games since tho old amiga in 95'. Always been able to hold my own on the games, this 2008 version i can't get to grips with, am i missing something? My tactics seem fine but it just ain't happening, not enjoying the game at all!

Luckily i've just read an earlier post from you, (guide to tactics), so i'm hoping that will help. Really gettin hammered tho with every team i've been, my worst was fc Utrecht, 8 points from 20 games, i'm usually good at these games!

I agree that this FM is very hard to get used to regarding the way to play with your team. For starters, I suggest you play with the 8.0.2 patch. Secondly, if you really really really want to be dedicated to succeeding in this game, I suggest you make a tactic which fits the quality of your players (do play with full backs though) and stick to this tactic. Now go play your first match on full match. It can be boring sometimes but you can definately see what it working and what isn't. You can play with some team and individual instructions to try and get rid of the things that aren't working. You can also focuss on the things that are working and trying to make those more dominant.

My opinion is that watching matches on extended mode it fun to watch but you can't really see what it going right or wrong. In full match mode, you see the same mistakes over and over again and you just know that you'll have to do something about that. In full match mode, you'll see these moment pretty quick while in extended mode you discover them once the match is almost over.

I have the exact same problem, all of the other fm's were great but i can't really get into a game on fm 2008. I've downloaded the 8.02 patch and its still too hard and it still has glitches.

The amount of goals i concede from defenders mistakes is silly. There clearances out of play when they could knock it up the pitch too. When my team clear the ball it goes to there defence, when thay clear it it goes to there attack. I've tried different styles, different formations, with the 8.02 patch this is, and still the same sillyness. My players get caught on ball easily, don't pass quick enough, something not right. I love these games but this is not the same.

Im also in deep shit since 8.02 came out and really for the 1st time don't have solution at all. I don't think that problem is full or extended match mode. It is up to match engine and bugs.
The worst, same what has happening on 8.02 I can see on FM Live, since Im beta tester. Same match engine and same shit! (On FM Live my biggest success was 9th in world ranking and Im always in 1st 50 teams)

To add, I play this serial since CM 3, and with FM 08 I can see only regression not progression in game developemant. Now with 8.02 patch this game become unplayable for me.

common thing which I noticed that regularly happening in FM 08 8.02 and FM Live:

1. Your opponent score in every shoot on target and your team can't get even 1 goal from 5 shoots on target rate. (The best here is that opponent demolish you 50, 4-1 etc since they score every single shoot on target and in match report after the game there is title: xxxx strikes lucky!". I have to admit that SI have good sense of humour)

2. Regularly your team concede goals in last minutes of the match

3. GK or defenders making stupid mistakes, like giving balls to the opponent ST in 16 yard box

4.It is impossible to win match vs. last team on table

I notice this first on FM Live, since I didn't played FM 08 for while. Than I started one game in FM 08 just to compare it with my FM Live experience.

In first try: Took Rapid in Austrian league and for 2 season I was 2nd in both seasons. I was much better vs. old goatt Trappatoni but small teams gave him 2 titles
In second try: Took Netherlands league and PSV, which is top team + with all money available I brought all top prospect players. Uh. total disaster. I couldn't win game at all. Even in Dutch Cup I lost from non-league club in 2nd round
third try: Polish league I took Crakowia. Small club but not so bad for Poland and same as with PSV: I couldn't win a *uck*n single match

As summery of all of this I think that SI messed up. They are developing two totally different games on the same match engine, trying to fight Eidos again because they are developing also MMO manager. For FM 08 is ok that ME can be hard but in FM live interference from match engine luck is so big that manager can just pretend to play. I was very high in ranking just following pattern how ME assign luck to my team. Than it happening (what you will notice in FM 08 8.02) that players doesn't follow your instructions on the pitch at all. On the end I have no clue why I won or lost some match! and that is ridiculous..or maybe Im just stupid?

Please, if there is some smart person I need advice or even tutoring.

last minute goals, usually the opposition throws four up front last 5/10 mins so you have to set a tactic to defend against that ie 5 defenders for late on in close games,it was happening to me a bit but now i have sorted it

no actually I tried also 5-4-1 at the ending but it doesn't work..tried also different mentality versions, defending, attacking, counters, than with man mark or zonal, offside traps, but no success with any of this.

Tried different tactics. Not just mine own. I tried all tacs from FM formations tactics section and non of them worked in my case.
This game simply sucks!

try a 4-4-2 diamond down load ryans 4-4-2 diamiond nrom d/load centre then go in to the tatic and tick play offside, its works for me, also try going direct in last few minutes gets the ball down the field given you opps longer to get ball back wastes time
