Question Help - dismal possession

Playing a new game, still in pre-season friendly matches, with Rotherham. I played a month in 2 games to figure out the basics, but have not gone further with the game.

I have been mostly concerned with getting everyone's legs ready, so a lot of bench players are getting PT. Results have been mixed, having lost a friendly to Newton but beaten Barnsley.

The one thing that is common across all games is truly awful time of possession, under 40% against Wolves in a 3-1 thumping. I expect my playing style (4-4-2, two variants used, Defensive mentality, Quick tempo, Direct passing, low Creative) is not going to dominate the ball, but I would not expect the results to be this dramatic. More importantly, I don't know how to change styles to use the mediocre talent I have effectively - more possession oriented passing probably won't work - but I know the League will be grim if I play most matches in my own end.

Any suggestions

Hmm dont know about your mediocre players, try playing efficient football. i would suggest using fast players and then direct passing and counters. I dont really ever play on low divisions so just be patient youll get it.

You should just download some of our tactics from the download area and just try them out if they help.

The problem with the suggestion to use fast players is that I really don't have any....and no transfer budget. Fastest player on the roster was 14, but have picked up some speed in the midfield with Loan players (15, 16) - that has actually helped.

What I am looking for is more patient possessions when I have the ball in the attacking zone. The Rotherham roster is above average for League 2, but unlike many clubs, there is really nothing to build a threat around in the attack.

Have managed to grind out 3 successive wins in league play, all 1-0, and knock off Leeds to advance to the 2nd round of League Cup, but counters have been the most effective scoring tactic.

My worst game by far has been the home game against Wrexham, where they were clearly playing for a draw - the inability to develop pressure until I changed to a more Attacking orientation in late game desperation almost cost me the game.

So the question I have is what parameters do I adjust to improve my own possession passing game. Closing down is improving the pressure on the ball and helping overall possession, but still need to find a formula to value the ball more.
