Q: Tom, congratulations on the job. What were your first thoughts in getting it? A: I am delighted to be able to have the chance to manage this club. It will be my aim to get the Sky Blues back to the highest tier in English Football. Q: Did the chairman approach you or did you apply for the job? A: I heard the job was available in the media and said I was interested. I have the job now. Next question please. Q: Has the chairman made enough money available for you to improve the current squad? A: I don't think that the club's personal finances should be made public. I am fully confident that the money the chairman has will be enough to turn us into a Premieship side in the short-term. Saying that, my current squad only needs a little bit of improving. By the time the press pack had been cleared from the Ricoh Press Room, and the formalities had been dealt with, it was early afternoon. Varney met his players for the first time at the attached training ground - having already been introduced to the staff in the morning. After being impressed by the 1st team training sessions which were ran by Darren Robinson, 1st team coach, who is helped out by Alan Cork and Brian Burrows. I arrived at the ground being greeted by die-hard Blues fans, when I initially saw them I thought that we were going to have some trouble but when they saw me they started chanting my name and I was in dream world. That morning I met with Martin Smith and John Scott, two new scouts that I brought in. I decided to send Martin to track Gabriel Agbonlahor’s and Tom Huddlestone’s progress, two potential loan signings. I also sent John to scout for a James Vaughan and Everton keeper John Ruddy. I wanted to personally track 3 important players myself. I needed a left back to replace the ageing Marcus Hall, a centre back and a winger. I wanted to focus on Gareth Bale from Southampton, James McEveley and Marvin Williams.
I wanted to ask a few of the lads to recommend some new signing to see where they thought we might need improving so i called Elliot Ward, Colin Cameron and Leon McKenzie in to my office to discuss this.
