Goats owning clubs, soap stars managing them, Iffy Onura doing punditry on it... So it's safe to say I wasn't surprised to be offered a job managing Third Division Parnahyba. My qualifications? I own a football shirt. Crazy? I thought so, but the chairman was adamant I should manage his club. I had eaten in his restaurant while on holiday (while wearing said qualifying shirt) and he'd spotted me and offered me the job. I had a job at home, but the English weather is always depressing, so I took this one to keep me in the sun. When I was introduced to the squad, I was unimpressed. Mainly because I only had four senior players. And two of them were injured. The chairman couldn't offer me any transfer funds to build a squad and, even if he could, I only had £850 left on my weekly wage budget - which I needed a large chunk of to pay an assistant manager - so I knew I'd be relying on the club's youth system for the season. The assistant I hired was extremely experienced: Josué Teixeira, the former manager of top Brazillain club Fluminense. He didn't speak any English, but then we didn't have any English-speaking players. I guess I'll just have to learn Portuguese. Merda aconteç. With Teixeira on board, I had £550 left in my wage kitty, so I thought I'd have a look around, just in case there was an experienced goalkeeper out there that I could bring in. I also decided to investigate the possibility of a couple of loan signings. | | | | | 03-05-07, 02:09 PM | #2 (permalink) | | future king of england, FmF-UniT member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: weymouth Posts: 544 Thanks: 25 Thanked 25 Times in 19 Posts | sounds like a good challenge good luck with it, keep it posted im intersted how it turns out for you :thumb: | Huggy B FmF-UniT | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to kopking2006 For This Useful Post: | | 03-05-07, 02:53 PM | #3 (permalink) | | FMFs very own ;) Join Date: May 2006 Posts: 2,195 Thanks: 39 Thanked 130 Times in 111 Posts | this could be a great story mate KUTGW | thanks to James M for the sig, cheers buddy :D EFC Diddy FMF Unittttt :P | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to evertonfan For This Useful Post: | | 03-05-07, 03:04 PM | #4 (permalink) | | Decent Youngster Join Date: Feb 2007 Posts: 23 Thanks: 7 Thanked 0 Times in 0 Posts | My first game in charge came six days later, an away match in the Piauí State Championship against Oeiras. To compound my troubles, the youth team didn't contain a single player eligible to play in the game. Looks like I'm going to have to bring in an entire squad of players on loan. If the FA will let me. In the meantine, I used the two fit professionals I had, the closest to full fitness of the injured players and made up the numbers with a group from the supporters club, who were just glad to be able to pull on their club's shirt in a real game. I'd have played myself and my coaches were we not all either over the hill or out of shape. The first half started well, espescially for a team of largely amateur players. We even scored first after just 3 minutes, but it wouldn't last. The trouble with amateur players is that they play like amateurs, and it wasn't long before we found ourselves 4-1 down. I'd already resigned myself to defeat, there was no way back for us in this one. The two fully-fit players were coping well but Rogers, who wasn't anywhere near fit to begin with, was knocking on death's door by half time. I knew he wouldn't finish the game. Half-Time Score: Oeiras 4-1 Parnahyba In the second half things got worse. Goalkeeper Sergio, having been chipped by one of his own defenders' backpass, managed to chase it down just before it crossed the line. Then he put it over himself instead. And things went down hill from there. The final score of 6-1 didn't tell the full story of their dominance. After the sixth went in, they just gave up trying to score. It was a humiliating defeat, but it showed just how much work I had left to do. We'd had a two-week break since our last game and I'd taken the time to rebuild. I quickly realised that I had to make a choice between keeping the club in the State Championship and keeping the finances in the red. And to me, the football was more important. So I brought in no less that 32 players - more than enough to guarantee some success - and devised a new formation to accentuate our strengths and protect our weeknesses. The first half showed I'd made the right choices in terms of both tactics and players. We scored first when 19 year old striker Washington picked up a clearance and beat a few defenders before slotting the ball home. We then got two more goals, with Washington completing his hat-trick. His second goal was a superb curling free-kick from the outside of the box on seven minutes, his third came at the end of another mazy run on the stroke of half-time. Half-Time Score: Parnahyba 3-0 Comercial There was nothign to say at half-time except 'keep it up' and I sent my boys out to complete the demolition job. We continued to dominate the game, and were unfortunate to concede a goal. Complacent defending let Bruno through for Comercial and he slotted home easily. But we only conceded once, and with us having a lot of chances but unable to score, that's how the game finished. We were four points behind the leaders when we made the away trip to second-placed Flamengo. The game would be a true six-pointer and we had to win if we had any chance of being State Champions. We knew we needed to win to stay in with a shout, espescially with leader River playing away at Oeiras. The first half started well for us, with the game being extremely even, but it was Flamengo who scored first when Alan gave away a silly penalty that was converted easily by Carlos Alberto. Flamengo seemed happy with one-nil and sat on their lead until half-time. Half-Time Score: Flamengo 1-0 Parnahyba In the second-half, everything fell apart. Our players looked tired and just weren't interested. I was severely hoping that last week's result wasn't a fluke when Carlos Alberto got his second by heading home a corner. And when the third went in, courtesy of a Fabio free kick, I was just praying we wouldn't concede a fourth. We didn't.
