Default 1873: A Great Team Is Born

History

Rangers F.C were formed in 1873 and were the first team in the world to win more than 50 Premier League titles. Since that feat of 50 league titles was reached in 2003, they have only won the SPL once more in another dramatic final day finish which saw future Celtic player Scott McDonald score two goals for Motherwell in the last two minutes of the last day of the season in 2005 to hand Rangers the league title.

This season (2006-07), the team had to endure Paul Le Guen which eventually failed after poor decisions. Mainly because of a fall-out between himself and club captain Barry Ferguson and also signings such as Filip Sebo and Sasa Papac.

Paul Le Guen

Le Guen's arrival was greeted with a fair amount of optimism by Rangers players and supporters alike but it was not to be for the flamboyant Frenchman who had previously been succesful with Lyon but has sinced moved back to his native country to manager PSG.

Paul Le Guen is now at PSG in France!

An Old-Face Returns for Battle

Rangers' chairman David Murray had to act quickly to get the fans back on his side and promptly brought in, then Scotland manager, Walter Smith. After a battle over compensation with SFA Rangers got their man. He brought with him a very good backroom staff of Ally McCoist, who will be assisant manager and was previously a great servant of Walter's when he played for Rangers. The third man in this three man team is Kenny McDowall who has always been a Rangers fan but ironically had been reserve coach at Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Walter Smith has returned to Rangers after spells with Everton and Scotland!

New Signings

Walter Smith has already wrapped up the signings of several players but will still want to expand the squad at Ibrox and get rid of several players. Smith went out and snatched Kevin Thomson away from under Celtic's noses and splashed out £2M for the youngster.

Smith also brought in three new central defenders. Experienced heads David Weir and Ugo Ehiogu joined from Everton and Middlesbrough. Andy Webster also joined on loan with a view to a permanent deal.

Rangers have also completed two future transfers of Falkirks Alan Gow and St Mirren's Kirk Broadfoot. Both of whom are up and coming Scottish youngsters.

Thomson has signed for Rangers, but could Brown be next?

1st July 2006

Transfer News

Six Set to Depart

New Rangers manager Walter Smith is set to offload six players from the wage bill as he looks to rebuild the squad at Ibrox. The most notable of players is Filip Sebo who has been a complete 'flop' since joining the Ibrox club for £1.8M. The other five players are Gavin Rae, Libor Sionko, Sasa Papac, Makhtar N'Diaye and Brahim Hemdani.

Gavin Rae, Mahktar N'Diaye, Brahim Hemdani, Filip Sebo, Sasa Papac and Libor Sionko will all be on the way out of Ibrox if an offer comes in!

9th July 2006

Transfer News

One In, Two Out for Gers!

Walter Smith has already acted on his word and has already offloaded two players. Gavin Rae and Sasa Papac were the first to go for a combined fee of around £750k. Rae, 26, also had offers from Motherwell and Nottingham Forest but he elected to go to the Premiership with Reading.

A whole host of clubs made offers for Sasa Papac including the likes of Spartak Moscow but he elected to join Spanish relegation fighters, Celta.

Walter Smith and Ally McCoist had promised a big name signing and that is what the Rangers fans have been given today. Hearts 'keeper Craig Gordon who wa at one point wanted by Bayern Munich and Arsenal has been snapped up for a hefty fee of £4.7M. Gordon, 23, will face stiff competition from Stefan Klos and Allan McGregor for the number one shirt.

Rangers are also in the running for several other players including David Clarkson from Motherwell and Scott Brown from Hibs.

Gordon was a Hearts hero but will now be looking to get the number 1 shirt at the Gers!

Transfer News

Two In, Two Out for Gers!

Rangers have acted quickly again in the transfer market as Walter Smith looks to expand the squad at Ibrox. This time he has sold what was left of the three Austria Vienna players that were signed by Paul Le Guen.

Libor Sionko and Filip Sebo have left the club to join Rennes and Betis respectively. They have left for a fee totalling around £3M which should allow Rangers to sign Scott Brown which is expected to go through in the next couple of days.

Rangers have also signed two more players. James Fowler and Lewis Stevenson have been brought in from Kilmarnock and Hibs for a total fee of around £400k. A major coup for the Ibrox side.

Stevenson and Fowler have both been signed at Ibrox!

Rangers and Manchester United fought out a close game which eventually ended in a scoring 2-2 draw. It was a great chance for the fans to see the new signings and it was also a chance to see great players such as Wayne Rooney in the flesh.

Before the game, Rangers paraded their new signing that just signed today. They have managed to snap up Kilmarnock star Steven Naismith for a fee of around £400k. Thomas Buffel has also left the club for PSV in a deal worth £2.5M.

Buffel has left but Naismith has joined!

28th July 2006

Transfer News

Rangers have completed the signing of Scott Brown from Hibs for a fee of £2.4M. Rangers have been chasing the youngster for some time and have decided to act and splash the cash on him.

Walter Smith "We've been looking to sign Scott for some time now and to get him is fantastic for the club and we hope he enjoys his time here. We are still in the process of going for new players but right now my attention is on tomorrows home game against Hearts."

Unfortunately for Rangers, Brown will not be able to play in that match as he picked up an injury last week in training for Hibs and will miss at least another couple of weeks.

David Healy has flown to Ibrox tonight for contract talks and a medical and is expected to sign tomorrow but probably not in time for the clash with Hearts.

Rangers have also rejected a £1M bid from Aston Villa for defender Ian Murray. There has been speculation surrounding the versatile defender that he is to leave if Rangers sign Gary Naysmith from Everton in which talks are at an advanced stage.

Brown has signed but is injured and unable to play against former Edinburgh rivals Hearts!

Projected First Team Line Up for Rangers 06/07

10. Nacho Novo- 6. Barry Ferguson- 8. Kevin Thomson- 25. Charlie Adam

Default Update 8

29th July 2007 - SPL Match day - Rangers 2-0 Hearts

Line-Up - 13. Craig Gordon (GK), 20. Alan Hutton, 26. Steven Smith, 19. Karl Svensson, 2. Andy Webster, 10. Nacho Novo (Naismith 46), 25. Charlie Adam (Murray 86), 8. Kevin Thomson, 6. Barry Ferguson ©, 15. Kris Boyd (Stevenson), 4. David Healy

The game kicked-off at a sunny Ibrox with both teams looking up for the win. Surprise inclusion David Healy (who only signed late last night) started off well. Rangers’ Kris Boyd should have opened the scoring after only five minutes when he was through on goal but he completely miss-kicked the ball and it went over. Rangers’ tried and tried but could not create any openings. The only thing debutant ’keeper Craig Gordon had to do was make a brilliant save from a shot by former team-mate Roman Bednar. At half-time Walter Smith brought on Steven Naismith for Nacho Novo. The second-half started with very few chances but a piece of magic from Kris Boyd as he picked the ball up at the halfway line, beat two men and then passed the ball past Kurskis in the Hearts goal to give Rangers the lead. Rangers continued to exert their dominance and when Alan Hutton played in David Healy there was surely only one outcome. A debut goal for Healy meant that Rangers could breathe a little easier being two goals in front. Walter Smith then brought on Lewis Stevenson for Kris Boyd to sure up the result. An injury to Charlie Adam with only a few minutes left was worrying for Rangers and they had to bring on Ian Murray. Craig Gordon did not let his clean sheet slip in the closing moments as he had to make a brilliant double save to deny Hearts.

Transfer News

Three Depart Ibrox

Three players have left Rangers this morning for the final time. Jordan McMillan, Ian Murray and Brahim Hemdani have all left the club. McMillan, 17, has left to join Leeds for what is thought to be a nominal fee.

Ian Murray has departed to Aston Villa, for around £1M, paving the way for Gary Naysmith to come into the club. Finally, Brahim Hemdani has left for Palermo in a deal worth around £325k.

Rangers have also completed the loan signing of Danny Haynes from Ipswich who will provide cover to the first squad. Haynes is held in high regard and is a very good prospect for the future but Walter Smith has dismissed claims that he will make the move permanent.

Gary Naysmith has signed on a four year deal for £1.1M from Everton.

Naysmith has signed on at Rangers!

6th August 2006

SPL Match day - St Mirren Park - St Mirren 3-4 Rangers
Starting Line-Up

13. Craig Gordon (GK), 20. Alan Hutton, 26. Steven Smith, 19. Karl Svensson, 2. Andy Webster, 10. Nacho Novo (Naismith 27), 25. Charlie Adam (Naysmith 71), 8. Kevin Thomson, 6. Barry Ferguson ©, 15. Kris Boyd (Haynes 73), 4. David Healy

Match Action

Rangers started off well in this match and created a chance early on for David Healy but his header was well saved by the St Mirren ‘keeper. St Mirren then went up the other end and a foul by Andy Webster on John Sutton in the box was given a penalty. Sutton, himself, then stepped up and rammed the ball past Craig Gordon in the Rangers goal. The game continued at a fast pace with no ‘real’ football being played. St Mirren then, astonishingly, found themselves two goals to the good when Stewart Kean found space in the box to score his first of the season. Rangers manager Walter Smith then had to act and he brought on Steven Naismith for Nacho Novo. For the remainder of the first-half Rangers dominated the game but could not find a way through to goal thanks to great saves from St Mirren ’keeper Bullock. It only took one second-half minute to pull one back for Rangers as a series of 14 passes leading up to a Barry Ferguson tap-in pulled them back into the game. Then with just four minutes played in the second-half, Rangers were level when David Healy found space in the box and banged home the equaliser. What a comeback! With just ten minutes played in the second-half and with only their third chance of the half they scored again. David Healy again free in the box and with an expert finish found the bottom corner of the net! With twenty minutes left to play Rangers manager Walter Smith brought on Gary Naysmith for his debut to replace Charlie Adam. The comeback was spoiled with just fifteen minutes left when Garry Brady got the equaliser for St Mirren. Walter Smith acted on this by bringing on new loan signing Danny Haynes for his debut to replace Kris Boyd. Rangers looked like they had to settle for a point but in the third of four added on minutes David Healy bagged his hat-trick with a great finish to give Rangers the three points.

Transfer News

Jones Arrives

The news that Billy Jones has signed for Rangers has sparked their fans into life. He is seen as a great prospect and could very well be a great player for many years to come.

The defender or midfielder is Rangers’ eighth summer signing and will wear the number seven shirt which was vacated when Brahim Hemdani left the club.

Walter Smith “Billy is a great player. When we found out that he was available we made sure we got him.”

There was a whole host of other clubs interested including Aston Villa and Celtic but Rangers were too quick to move for all of them and they got their man.

Jones playing for Crewe in 2003 when he was only 16!

Match Action

This match started off on a very hot dry day in Aberdeen. It was Aberdeen who started the stronger with two quick chances falling to Steve Lovell. Rangers’ Kris Boyd then hit the bar but Rangers came up the park again and after only fifteen minutes Charlie Adam opened the scoring. Rangers were two goals in front when on 25 minutes Rangers were awarded a free-kick around 25 yards out and, with the aid of a deflection, Charlie Adam grabbed his second of the game. Rangers created a few more chances but nothing clear-cut. With just five minutes remaining before half-time, Rangers were down to ten men. David Weir adjudged to have committed a professional foul on Lee Miller and was shown the door. Rangers needed half-time as Aberdeen started to come at them but Rangers stayed two goals in front at the break. With just ten minutes left, Walter Smith made a couple of changes to see out the game with Billy Jones making his debut at centre-half. The game ended with Rangers on top and this left them with a clean sheet despite being down to ten men.
