Torino is looking at Abbruscato once more Two teams will meet in the evening match today and it's set to be a thriller already as both teams are in unstopable form lately and Torino has got a seven point advantage over the Nerazzurri who has a game in hand though. Torino has solved the injury problems and only Alessandro Rosina and Simone Barone have to be only guys on sidelines for Tanel Tursk side. "We've solved our problems, but Barone and Rosina are irreplacable for team like ours and we've missed them a lot in past weeks. Eventhough Barone we've missed for most of the season. Their injuries motivate other players to give extra effort though and I'm pleased with that. It's a great team we have in here," told Tursk whose side is surprisingly leading the Scudetto race. "At the start of the season we were predicted 6th. That wasn't what I was excepting, I wanted Champions League place. But my players have shocked me too. Such determination, united team efforts constantly all reminds me of my decade in Romania," he praised his players after leading the table with 21 games gone. "I think tomorrow will be a tough and even match with both teams trying to cancel out eachothers star players. We've always had interesting matches with Inter, I make my all that it wouldn't change tomorrow. Eventhough the results are more important in such games and if we need to close them down and play boring to get a victory, I will not hesitate to do it," he stated to the media in a press conference. Their last meeting in the first game of the season ended with a 1:1 draw with Torino's goal coming from Simone Barone. Today there is no Barone and Torino is hoping for marksman Elvis Abbruscato to beat his main contender for top scorer title David Villa with more goals. | | | | | 19-07-07, 09:28 PM | #202 (permalink) | | FMF Moderator Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: Dundalk, Ireland Posts: 2,716 Thanks: 203 Thanked 409 Times in 336 Posts Nominated 1 Time in 1 Post TOTW/F/M Award(s): 0 | gl against inter mate | | | | 20-07-07, 05:24 PM | #203 (permalink) | | Used In Squad Rotation Join Date: Nov 2006 Posts: 366 Thanks: 74 Thanked 3 Times in 1 Post Nominated 0 Times in 0 Posts TOTW/F/M Award(s): 0 | Torino - Inter 10th of February 2008 Stadio Olimpico, Turin Italian Serie A 2007/2008; Week 22 10' Elvis Abbruscato - 54' (Og) Marco Andreolli Match Highlights (3:02) Torino hit the post in a draw with Inter as the both times ended with one goal, eventhough the Nerazzurri was slightly better than homeside. Sunday's Serie A match between Torino and Inter was very important for the Italian title race and for Torino's chances as a good result was necessary againist main contenders Inter who were on a streak of hot form. Alessandro Rosina, Simone Barone and ex-Inter defender Andera Mei were out for the Granata, while Inter was without midfielder Dejan Stankovic. Franck Ribery got the first chance of the evening when his low banana shot from the edge of the area was saved by Marcelo Grohe. Couple of minutes later, Torino grabbed the lead as Gabriel Tamas long ball set up Elvis Abbruscato for an one on one opportunity, which the striker didn't miss. It was Abbruscato's 50th ever league goal for Torino Antonio Di Natale's harmless free-kick from 30 metres didn't even trouble Julio Cesar as it flew wide of the Inter goal. Though Grohe had to produce another great save at the other end when he got his hand to a low effort of Patrick Vieira from the edge of the area. Frenchman tried to beat Grohe with a volley dozen minutes later aswell, but he smashed the ball wide from 25 metres out. Torino got brilliant chance to double the lead in the final minute of the half when Di Natale's brilliant pass found Silva, who skinned Marco Materazzi, before shooting wide of the far post. Second half started with Inter chance as Oliver Dacourt managed to get an acrobatic shot towards Torino goal despite strong challenge of Marco Pisano, but the ball flew just over the bar. Torino showed their passing skills at the other end when several players set up another Silva run as the Portugese-Brazilian protegee dribbled past Walter Samuel to see his shot saved by Julio Cesar. Though nine minutes into the half, Inter got an equalizer in dramatic circumstances. Counter-attack saw David Villa's shot at near post saved by Grohe from Maxi Rodriguez cross, but unfortunately the saved ball bounced back to the net through the leg of Andreolli for right-backs second own goal in space of a month. Inter was inspired by the goal and Zlatan Ibrahimovic brilliantly showboated through the Torino defence before having his shot at near post saved. Shortly after Patrick Vieira's good free-kick was saved by Grohe with fingertips and Ribery shot over, free in the area. Though Torino got even closer to netting a possible winner when Antonio Di Natale's header from Marco Pisano's free-kick cliped off the post. Nicolae Mitea, Cecilio Velazquez and Cedric Konan were bringed in all at once to spice up Torino's game. Unfortunately Torino continued to have problems, but Maxi and Ibrahimovic both missed the goal with a volley and header respectively. Ibrahimovic was having amazing second half, but unluckily for him, he had to leave limping with injury just few minutes until the end as Vieira's low shot didn't trouble Torino after a corner kick. Torino was close to netting a last minute winner, but Cedric Konan headed Antonio Di Natale free-kick slightly over the goal from good position. Draw was good result for Torino though who still continues first with 4 points lead over Juventus, who alongside Roma and Inter has a game in hand. After Juventus and Inter lost their unplayed games, Torino's title chase became even more real as they enjoy a four point lead over their city neighbours while Inter have to sit on 6th spot in a very tight top of the table. "We've got the best chances to win it. Our season has reflected it, we've been in great form all the time. Not ofcourse slaying everyone on our way, but we've been consistently collecting points. We've already played three tough games with Roma, Palermo and Inter while most other contenders still have those teams and other tops ahead," told Tursk to Gazzetta dello Sport on Friday's newspaper. "I ofcourse, cannot control what future brings, but I hope we can be injury free which we had problems within January. But we've creater ourselves reasonable bench with a lot of talent," he told. "Soon we will have Alessandro Rosina back and I'm quite hopeful that Simone Barone may return before the end of the season aswell close to his real form. Those two are key parts of our midfield," said Tursk. Torino's next opponent is Chievo Verona. | | | | | 20-07-07, 11:29 PM | #205 (permalink) | | FMF Moderator Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: Dundalk, Ireland Posts: 2,716 Thanks: 203 Thanked 409 Times in 336 Posts Nominated 1 Time in 1 Post TOTW/F/M Award(s): 0 | hard luck against Inter mate, but at least you got a point of them. Torino didn't have any major news that shocked them before the match. Only Claudio De Sousa fell into the sidelines alongside first-teamers Alessandro Rosina and Simone Barone who had been in the injury list for much longer times alongside central defender Andrea Mei. Chievo's side didn't have any major absences going into this home-tie. The pitch was very wet and troubling the players, but Torino had much better start, but couldn't get a goal. Simone Padoin turned with the ball in box before shooting Alessandro Di Natale's corner kick low towards the goal which was followed by Cristian Lucchetti brilliant save. Minute later Elvis Abbruscato went past Francisco Pavon before his shot in box was saved aswell, while Silva's free-kick flew over the goal. Best chance of the match fell to Sergio Pellissier though, who jinked past Gabriel Tamas and go one on one with Marcelo Grohe as his shot was saved one on one. From counter-attack soon after, Elvis Abbruscato ran to Marco Andreolli's long pass, but his shot was from under too hard angle and despite getting past out of the chance, the shot was saved for the marksman. Fast move saw Grohe's long ball headed behind defenders by Silva for Roberto Stellone's low shot get tipped wide by brilliant Lucchetti. From following corner Gabriel Tamas headed over. Abbruscato went for great goal outside of the after recieving low pass from Silva, but his curling shot flew just over the near post. At the other end, Braafheld's low cross was followed by a nice shot from Pellissier at near post which was followed by brilliant reaction save of Grohe. The following minutes became tense as Torino grabbed the lead when Marco Pisano sent a low pass for Elvis Abbruscato, turning around the defender, whose shot flew into near top corner from the edge of the area. Chievo wanted a quick reply as Pellissier went past Raffaele Schiavi after recieving a long ball from situation following kick-off, but his lob over Grohe flew over. Roberto Stellone's low shot from the edge of the area was saved by Lucchetti, as neither of the goalkeepers didn't let extremely wet conditions bother them. Mathieu Flamini shot wide from 25-metres before subtitute Victor Obinna made similiar impact as like in last time againist Torino. One of his first touches took him past two Torino defenders before shooting the ball towards left corner of the goal. Silva tried from nearly half-pitch circle to put Torino back on lead, but his effort flew over the goal. Another quick passing move saw Silva free-up Roberto Stellone for a shot at goal which the striker took and shot wide, not noticing that Elvis Abbruscato was just beside him with a much better opportunity. Nikola Lazetic wasted a fine opportunity set up by Roberto Stellone, who headed the ball behind defenders for the Serb, as he shot over from the edge of the 6-yard box. Stellone tried to make up for his earlier mistake, by setting up Abbruscato with a great low cross from the left, but Rome-born striker saw his shot followed by brilliant save from Lucchetti. And wasteful nature of Torino's play soon paid it's price when Sammarco's pass set through Nigerian striker Obinna for a free run at goal as he shot the ball in from the post for his second. At half-time, Nikola Lazetic's dull game came to end and Nicolae Mitea was bringed in. Torino did got an immediate goal, Marco Pisano spotted Lucchetti out of his goal after the clearence and decided to have a go at the slightly empty goal at near post. Eventhough his effort would've probably gone in anyway, Abbruscato wanted to make it sure by getting his head to it and redirecting it and making the save impossible for Lucchetti. And less than ten minutes later, Abbruscato turned to a provider role as he dribbled past Chievo's defender before crossing it to near posts where Roberto Stellone got to the ball just before Lucchetti. Torino was back in the lead. Nicolae Mitea almost got his first ever Granata goal, but his header from Di Natale's cross was saved as Stefano Fiore's free-kick flew wide. Obinna's low shot was catched by Grohe easily, but Abbruscato was denied a fabulous hattrick by a fantastic save of Lucchetti as his header towards bottom corner of the far post from subtitute Stefano Fiore's cross seemed destined for the net. Marco Andreolli brilliantly blocked Mario Suarez shot for a corner at near post in middle of the half before Lionel Mathis returned from one month injury break by replacing Simone Padoin. Abbruscato had brilliant chance for a hattrick once again as he ran through two defenders with a pass from Marco Pisano, but the low finish went centimetres past the far post. Petri Pasanen saw his header from corner-kick brilliantly saved by flying Grohe as Chievo pushed for an equalizer in the final ten minutes. Victor Obinna then headed over Artbeitman's cross at far post before Torino had to continue with ten players as Gabriel Tamas limped off with an injury late in 88th minute. Tursk pushed Andreolli to center-back and Silva to right-back due to the injury. Pellissier got good chance after being left free in area, but Grohe closed his shot down well. Extra player of Chievo turned decisive in the sea of tired legs, and it was literally a sea with the rain pouring down non-stop. Grohe couldn't catch a Pavon nice shot and it fell onto the foot of Obinna who sent it powerfully into the empty net to make a dramatic equalizer in final minute of added time. It was hattrick for the Nigerian as he also scored a wonder goal in earlier tie between two sides. Two goals in added time really disappointed Torino fans in this tough condition, but the visiting side was better in all matters besides the score-line. Though it was the two strikers of the teams who caught attention - both Abbruscato and Obinna made it wonderful game to watch. In previous tie this season between two teams, Obinna dribbled past four Torino players after ball had been kicked off and scored a wonder goal. This all has led Tursk to make a bid for the pacey striker and it's reported that he's willing to buy the Nigerian for around eight million bound price tag. Though he's not the only big name player to come incase Torino gets guaranteed a Champions League place for next season as the manager has lined up series of big name signings. But besides Obinna, the other names are unclear. Only position Tursk will certainly invest into is the wing as there is set to be changes with line-up for next season according to Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport. Porto's Ricardo Quaresma and Sporting's Nani have previously been paired together with the outfit. | | | | | 23-07-07, 06:26 PM | #208 (permalink) | | Used In Squad Rotation Join Date: Nov 2006 Posts: 366 Thanks: 74 Thanked 3 Times in 1 Post Nominated 0 Times in 0 Posts TOTW/F/M Award(s): 0 | Catania - Torino 24th of February 2008 Angelo Massimilo, Cibali, Catania Italian Serie A 2007/2008; Week 24 8' 18' Elvis Abbruscato, 26' Nicolae Mitea, 41' Nikola Lazetic Match Highlights (2:12) Torino got back to winning ways despite Elvis Abbruscato's stupid red card ten minutes after scoring the opener as the Turin side beat Catania 3:0. Alessandro Rosina returned in final twenty minutes. Torino was under several problems heading to the match with Catania as coming from two consecutive draws they were in need of a victory. Job wasn't made easier as Alessandro Rosina couldn't make it to the starting line-up as originally planned and Silva suffered a virus takedown after the Chievo Verona game. So he joined Simone Barone and Andrea Mei in the sidelines. Despite that, it was Torino who got the lead eight minutes into the game. Alessandro Di Natale's corner kick was headed in by Elvis Abbruscato for his 18th league goal of the season. Though ten minutes later, striker really suffered a huge blow to his Capocannioniere race where he was leading with one goal prior to this week. Former-Arezzo star elbowed Catania's central defender Juhasz in the face and got sent off as a longer ban is likely to follow. Eight minutes later, Simone Padoin earned a free-kick from central position, twenty-five metres from Catania goal and Nicolae Mitea steped up in his first ever Torino start. Romanian sent a wonderful effort curling towards the far corner and it cliped in from the post for a wonderful goal. Mitea scored a fabolous first ever Torino goal At the other end, Juhasz header from Vargas corner was tipped over by Grohe for another tie of Catania as nothing came out of it. Instead Mattia Biso bursted over from good position several minutes later. Torino didn't seem to be bothered by the extra player of Catania and really sealed the game at the end of the half. Nikola Lazetic intercepted a pass and ran from half-way line and shrugged off several challenges to sent a wonderful strike towards the far top corner, nearly 30 metres from goal and Federico Vilar couldn't do anything to stop it. At start of the second half, Marco Andreolli kept Umberto Del Core on bay with a brilliant last ditch tackle as the boring half got a little better when Alessandro Rosina returned from a long injury break for Antonio Di Natale who was playing behind strikers today. Cedric Konan also came in to add pace to Granata attack. It almost bringed a result immediatelly. Rosina robbed the ball in midfield and Padoin's pass saw Cedric Konan go on a quick run behind the defenders. Eventhough Vilar could slap the ball from the feet of Konan, it fell to Padoin whose shot from the edge of the area flew over. Umberto Del Core's long range effort didn't really shake no-one on the pitch and the 3-0 win continued Torino's run on the frontline of Serie A. Torino was having problems getting full squad together for a very long time as constantly when someone recovered from injury, someone else had to stay out. This was the case again, when Alessandro Rosina returned to starting line-up againist Ascoli, but Elvis Abbruscato was out with a three-match suspension. Also Silva, Simone Barone and Andrea Mei missed for the title contesting Granata in this tough home game againist Ascoli. Simone Padoin's Torino career had started well and it almost got better when he sent a thunderbolt towards goal from 30 metres out, but Mora parried the ball brilliantly with a flying save from top corner. Torino did get a leading goal on 12th minute when Roberto Stellone's brilliant diving header from Marco Andreollis free-kick went flying towards the far post and landed in the net as Mora had no chance to stop the fantastic effort. Three mintes later, Torino grabbed one more as a result of a mistake between goalkeeper Mora and defender, as Mora couldn't control a very powerful back-pass and Cedric Konan picked it up. Eventhough the Ivorian saw his shot saved, Stellone tapped in the follow-up. It was 10th goal of the league season for Roberto Stellone Torino was dominant in the start of the game and Stellone spoted Cedric Konan with a brilliant pass behind defenders, which the Ivorian striker picked up, but his shot flew over the bar, having left the defenders behind. Marcelo Grohe finally got bringed into game shortly after half-hour mark as he brilliantly catched David Generelo's long range effort. Generelo was Ascoli's best player of the first half and he sent a low cross for Juan Valera, whose shot from central position flew straight at Grohe and the Brazilian pushed it away. Gionata Mingozzi had two long range efforts go wide of the goal before the break which saw Cacau replacing Konan. Second half started with a great combination of Torino, which saw Antonio Di Natale freed up at near post with Andreolli's pass, but winger saw his shut pushed over by fingertips of Mora. Lionel Mathis and Nikola Lazetic came on before Sasa Bjelanovic was at the end of a fine long ball foward, but saw his low shot saved after breaking his way into the area. Mingozzi's central effort flew over from 30 metres, but Cacau almost made it 3:0 at the other end when Nikola Lazetic went past three players to cross for Brazilian whose header was saved by Spaniard Mora. Duda shot a free-kick over the goal in final minutes as Torino enjoyed a second consecutive victory and their lead upfront rose to four points as Juventus had a draw with Udinese. There was some bad news for Torino fans as Marco Pisano seemed to injure himself in final minutes and could face time in the sidelines. Torino was having several problems with missing players ahead of all-important face to face match with one of the contenders for thrown of Italy's football - Sampdoria. Midfielder Simone Barone did return to trainings after his broken leg had recovered, but it takes a lot of time for him to get back into match fitness. Alongside him were missing first teamers Silva, Elvis Abbruscato and Marco Pisano. Also third choice central defender Andrea Mei sat on sidelines. Match started off slow and Sampdoria got the first chance when the game had gone for over quarter of an hour as Sergio Volpi was at the end of a cleared ball of defence, but his one-touch shot flew over the bar as Marcelo Grohe helplessly watched the ball flying. Grohe was the man to thank for Torino just minute later when he brilliantly reacted to save a Fabio Bazzani header from Martin Petrov's cross. Torino was struggling slighly with quick counters of Sampdoria and Marco Andreolli allowed Martin Petrov to have a easy shot from a long ball foward, but luckily for the right-back, the shot flew wide of the goal. And Andreolli made up for his mistake when he got the ball from Jerzy Dudek's clearance on the edge of the area and sent a nice pass foward to Roberto Stellone who powerfully slammed the ball in at near post with Dudek closing down on him. Though party turned into a nightmare in two minutes. Straight after the kick-off, Antonio Di Natale mis-timed his two-footed challenge in the wet surface and blatantly hacked down Rodolfo Arruabarrena. Referee sent the winger off for an immediate shower with just 28 minutes gone. And Torino couldn't even hold on for a minute as Marcelo Grohe's wrong decision to come out allowed Petrov to tap a rather clever Andrea Gasbarroni corner in at near post. Sampdoria took good use of their extra man, but couldn't score as Bazzani hit wide and Volpi over, before Grohe also had to produce a fantastic save on Volpi's curling shot from the edge of the area. Torino got close to getting back to the leading role, but Jerzy Dudek made a brilliant stop on Alessandro Rosina's free-kick from 23 metres. Torino got another chance minute later when Alessandro Rosina recieved brilliant pass from Simone Padoin, but quickly found himself surrounded by three Sampdoria defenders and could only sidenet the ball. Petrov was brilliantly denied by Grohe as the Bulgarian turned around in area to send a powerful shot under the bar which was matched by the Brazilian goalkeeper's reaction. Tursk hoped to keep Torino team more fresh in these tough conditions with one man down and bringed in Marco Rossi as Cecilio Velazquez, making his first start, couldn't continue thanks to a knock. Nikola Lazetic also joined the game. Simone Padoin had been in hot form in past weeks, but his long-range free-kick was brilliantly saved from top corner by Dudek who was continuing to enjoy his time between Sampdoria posts. And on 58th minute, Sampdoria finally got what they wanted, Emiliano Bonazzoli's pass found clubs top scorer Bazzani for a brilliant half-volley which left Grohe absolutely no chance as it entered the goal at far post. Rosina sent Roberto Stellone on a one on one situation minute later, but the striker couldn't grab his second to equalize the match as he sent the ball flying over instead of a classic low finish. Volpi saw his long range effort parried by Grohe as Marco Rossi saw a yellow card soon after. Stefano Fiore was bringed on as Tursk's final plea to save the match and the experienced winger did bring something extra to Granata's game. Soon after Gabriel Tamas saw his header from Rosina's corner brilliantly saved over the bar by Dudek. Stellone then recieved a nice pass from Lazetic, but found himself under too hard angle and hit wide of the far post in final minutes pressure of Torino. Lazetic and Stellone combined once more when the Serbian pass found the striker in box, who turned around and shot just over the far top corner as Torino's luck had turned it's back this Sunday evening. Stellone was in center of action, but was selfish when he shot Simone Padoin's pass to sidenetting from nearly 30 metres out while Alessandro Rosina had freed up for a possible through pass. The loss saw Torino's lead cut into half, despite Juventus drawing as Inter's win rose them to second place. Torino's situation wasn't much better than in last weeks as Elvis Abbruscato, Simone Barone, Silva, Andrea Mei and Antonio Di Natale missed out the trip to Tuscany to play relegation fighting Siena. Some positive news after Sampdoria loss came at the left wing though as Marco Pisano returned to defence after two weeks out with a broken nose. Cacau was handed a surprise start. Torino's game got off to a dream start when bad header of Dindeleux flew behind his own defence and Roberto Stellone picked it up, moved central and sent the ball on it's way towards the far post for a very nice finish. Though Siena put on immediate pressure and Erjon Bogdani's header from Konko's cross flew over the bar. Minute later Siena got what their pressure was meant to get as Bogdani's brilliant pass set up Albert Streit who brilliantly used Marcelo Grohe's bad decision to come out and sent a low finish in at the near post from the edge of the area. Bogdani's size was unmatched in Torino defence and the marksman again got a header from free-kick with twenty minutes gone, but luckily for the visitors, he headed wide. Vincent Candela shot over from the edge of the area minutes later after cutting in from the left wing and Bogdani again headed over Konko's cross less than a minute later. Marcelo Grohe parried a nice, but central, shot of Simone Vergassola from 25 metres as Alessandro Rosina shot a volley wide of the goal, but it would've not counted anyway as the attacking midfielder was in offside position when recieving the ball. Torino started to get back into the match at the end of the half as Nicolae Mitea's free-kick was headed over at near post by Cacau, but Torino's plans got another hit when Simone Padoin limped off injuried and Lionel Mathis joined the game. Konko and Mathis had shots go over at either end of the pitch, but Mitea got closest to the goal in first half, when his powerful shot from nice angle was brilliantly saved by Miguel Angel Moya in Siena's goal. Streit also missed a great chance as he shot wide in middle of the area, ten metres from goal from Gorasz Zajc cross. Second half started almost with Alessandro Rosina own-goal as the midfielder didn't see where Marcelo Grohe is while making the back-pass and luckily for him, his pass just sidenetted the goal and Siena had to limit themselves with a corner. Rosina sent a free-kick high and wide minutes later at other end while Cedric Konan came in for Cacau. Konan made an immediate impact when he got one on one thanks to a long pass of Marco Andreolli, but saw his effort saved. Minutes later Stefano Fiore replaced disappointing Nikola lazetic while Zajc shot over from central position. Both goalkeepers, Grohe and Moya, made brilliant save on Albert Streit's and Gabriel Tamas headers respectively, while Roberto Stellone's central shot was also saved after he was left free in area to recieve a throw-in from Stefano Fiore. In 80th minute Torino finally got a goal as they started pressing in final minutes. Konan was left without proper marking in the area and he was found by an Andreolli pass as he buried it to far post. Two minutes later, horrible goal-kick of Moya saw Rosina go one on one with him, but the former U21 international shot wide. Bogdani shot over from 23 metres capping off a quick move of Siena, but they were lucky minute later when Cedric Konan ran behind defenders again to send Gabriel Tamas pass againist the woodwork one on one with Moya. Seconds later though the ball had reached Stefano Fiore in the wing as the international crossed for Konan to head it in at near post and secure the three points. Bogdani's header at near post was catched while Rosina shot over from edge of the area as Torino won 3:1 and continue with a two point lead at the top of the tight Serie A table. Torino: 1-Marcelo Grohe; 4-Marco Andreolli, 5-Gabriel Tamas, 2-Raffaele Schiavi, 6-Marco Pisano; 17-Nikola Lazetic (67' 7-Stefano Fiore), 12-Simone Padoin (39' 24-Lionel Mathis), 36-Nicolae Mitea; 10-Alessandro Rosina; 11-Roberto Stellone, 9-Cacu (57' 20-Cedric Konan) Cautioned : None Other Results Ascoli 2:0 Palermo Catania 1:1 Chievo Empoli 2:0 Messina Fiorentina 0:1 Roma Lazio 3:0 Parma Milan 1:2 Bologna Sampdoria 2:0 Inter Juventus 2:0 Napoli Udinese 1:0 Atalanta Torino Position: 1st Visit Torino Channel FM at YouTube | | | | | 28-07-07, 10:10 PM | #215 (permalink) | | Used In Squad Rotation Join Date: Nov 2006 Posts: 366 Thanks: 74 Thanked 3 Times in 1 Post Nominated 0 Times in 0 Posts TOTW/F/M Award(s): 0 | Torino - Fiorentina 16th of March 2008 Stadio Olimpico, Turin Italian Serie A 2007/2008; Week 28 33' 45' Elvis Abbruscato, 45+2' Roberto Stellone - 61' Alexander Farnerud, 62' Marco Donadel 71' Luca Toni Match Highlights (4:31) Chaos in middle of second half outshone Elvis Abbruscato's brilliant return to the Torino team as two Fiorentina players got sent off in space of 20 seconds, Alexander Farnerud for kicking Cedric Konan who just came on and Marco Donadel for hacking down Silva for his second yellow. Torino's Sunday evening opponent wasn't going to be easy in Week 28 as they met Fiorentina who were trying to save any chances for title in this tight season in top of the table as they had fallen behind of the group of leaders. Previous tie had ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw, but both sides have had slumps and rises since that, but Torino was certianly in hotter form even without Simone Padoin, Antonio Di Natale and Simone Barone. Torino's chances in this home tie were certainly boosted even more by the return of Silva and club top-scorer Elvis Abbruscato. It took some tie for teams to get into the game on the wet pitch and Roberto Stellone's free-kick from 25 metres which flew wide, was the only chance of the game for nearly a half of the first half. Though the game finally kicked off in terms of chances when Roberto Stellone got Andreollis long pass as he then shrugged off few challenges before having his low shot saved by Frey. Stellone got another Andreolli's pass minutes later, this time with a head though, and laid it forward for Elvis Abbruscato who hit the bar with goalkeeper Sebastien Frey beaten. Frey minute later brilliantly got his hand to direct Gabriel Tamas long-range effort over the crossbar and minute later Alexander Farnerud saw his free-kick fly wide at the other end. Torino was dominant in the first half though and got the goal three minutes after clock had reached half hour as Alessandro Rosina's corner-kick was headed in by Elvis Abbruscato at near-post. Short corner to Abbruscato at near post proved it's worth again And just before the time started ticking past 45 minutes, Torino got almost copy-paste goal as again Abbruscato headed in Rosina's corner at near post, even-though it was little more further from goal this time. It was marksman 20th league goal and put him back at top scorer position despite missing over 6 games this season and going out on early on few more. This wasn't the last of the half though as Farnerud curled over before Rafaele Schiavi's clearance found Roberto Stellone beating the offside trap and smashing the ball in at near post to put Torino on comfortable 3:0 lead. Second half started as slow as first and Torino finally got themselves a scoring chance on 57th minute when Nikola Lazetic's cross was headed towards the net by Stellone, but it was denied by flying Frey. Minutes later Elvis Abbruscato curled a strong effort towards the Fiorentina goal which was beated away again by Fiorentina's only savior, Frey as Alessandro Potenza cleared the ball for a throw-in. And chaos came after that to Fiorentina side. Torino's substitute Cedric Konan, who came on for Stellone, couldn't even be on pitch for few seconds before falling into a heated argument with Swedish international Farnerud, who couldn't keep himself calm as he hit the Ivorian and it immediately got noticed by the referee. While Farnerud got sent off, another substitute Cecilio Velazquez continued the game for Torino, but just ten seconds later, Marco Donadel hacked down Torino's Brazilian talent Silva and received his second yellow card. Fiorentina couldn't calm down and Manuel Pasqual and Alessandro Potenza got also booked for horrific tackles on Granata players. Torino stayed calm in the situation, even-though it was very close to turning into a fight on Olimpico. Game got back to normal soon and Silva made a great short run on the edge of the Fiorentina area before sending a brilliant shot towards the near top corner, but Frenchman Frey was at his best and kept it out with brilliant save. Silva scored his debut goal against Fiorentina earlier this season and was getting more and more into the match as his pass set free Elvis Abbruscato, who found himself move to shoot in box, but his low effort was brilliantly denied by full-stretched Frey. Fiorentina got a surprise consolation goal minute later as Potenza's long pass found Luca Toni whose shot took a deflection of Gabriel Tamas and flew over Marcelo Grohe. Nikola Lazetic shot wide at the other end and Elvis Abbruscato's allowed Cecilio Velazquez cross to bounce on the ground before hitting it over the Fiorentina goal. Grohe saved a great header from reported Torino target Riccardo Montolivo as Potenza crossed in the free-kick. Full-back was having a great second half. Rosina shot over from edge of the area while Mario Santana could've made it 3:2 in final minute, but didn't use Raffaele Schiavi's mistake and hit the ball wide one on one with Grohe at near post. Victory continues Torino reign at the top, but the gap with second placed Sampdoria didn't change. On positive side for Granata, close rivals Juventus did draw with Parma, leaving them 5 points behind.
