Since this country has weird rules and a weird league set up unlike any other in the world I have decided to “try” and explain it a bit further.

Now when you start in the MLS the first thing you will notice when you look at your team is that you have an “Information” section at the bottom of your screen. (See Image 1)

You will also notice that you have a Maximum of 25 Senior Players and a maximum squad size of 35. I have found out this is due to contract status to encourage you have certain players under a certain age(?)

It is important to choose whom you want from the word go and get rid of those you don’t want. Get your scouts out early as well.

A quick look into the training side of things in the MLS shows you that you only have a Reserve team and no 3 tier system like in the English Leagues so only 1 training system and set of coaches required.

Now the looking for feeder and parent club section is the same.

Take a look at the fixtures for your team and your reserves, as there are very few running up to the start of the season. This is a very good way to get money into the club and freshen up your players.

I loaded just the MLS and was completely lost when choosing which teams to pick for friendlies in order to get the most money in. I have found that the average you will get is between 25k and 40k per match. Also for your reserves is about 1k.

Transfers and Buying Players:

Transfers and buying players seems a real minefield as in that when you approach a player who already is in an MLS team you don’t offer them money but you offer them “Draft Picks” and Players on your transfers listing.

When you buy players for your MLS team be VERY careful that you keep an eye on your wages because you the league has a maximum limit you can have when you put forward your squad. So a helpful hint is to make sure you sign good players on VERY low wages per week. Also try and balance your squad when you buy player and watch that you do have sufficient cover when you make your squad for the MLS season.

I have noticed that you there are a lot of different ways to “buy” players and it all depends on their age and nationality.
If you are buying from “overseas” then the transfer way is the same as if you were running an English club.

If you are buying an American player then you don’t actually offer the club that holds that players contract any money but you can offer them any of your players who you do not want or/and offer then “draft picks”.

If you try and buy an American Youth player you will get this message appear on your screen:

Now lets look at the screen you have when you try and buy another player from another team on is on the “Waiver” list. I will cover the Waiver List later on in more details.

I am yet to complete a purchase using this system but will try and get one done and explain it further. Also I hope to have someone try and purchase one of my players using this method so I can see how it works.

Now you have the “Draft” and this is a very weird system. You are first presented with this screen.

On here you can see a list of players who are on the draft choices. You can view their stats the same as other players by clicking on them. It is best to look at your squad and see who you will need for the future as far as I can gather this is very crucial in getting good youth talent.

At the bottom of the screen you see that there is a Draft Round selection. In there are a list of the 12 teams from both divisions and in order get to choose a player they want or pass their go. (Personally I do not see the point in passing, if the talent is there sign them!)
If you click “See next pick” you will see which team chooses which player until it is your choice.
When its is your choice right click on the player and you are presented with the screen above and then click on “Pick player from draft”. This player is then assigned to you and you get to offer them a contract.

If you look into the list of draft picks at the bottom of the screen as well you will see you have 2 rounds but only really get to choose 1 player (not sure of 2nd season as I am only in the first season).

You have till the 7th Feb 2006 to submit your final roster of players for the following season. You also have a wage budget that the league imposes when you register yoru players (much like the Australian A-League) and with the added confusion of Senior players contracts and Development contracts this can get confusing and be the make or break of your team.

After you submit your MLS squad for the season make sure the next few friendlies you play you use the players you submitted cause there is no point to playing players who are not going to be used.

First proper game of the MLS I am playing is a cup match which allows you 7 subs on the bench and, the same as the English leagues, a maximum of 3 changes,

Waiving A Player.. What does it mean? What does it do?

Understanding the Abv’s next to player’s names in your squad:
SI = Senior International
Dev = Development Player
YI = Youth International

There is another difference between the MLS and the rest of the world as in when you are choosing the “Player Interaction” feature (new to FM07) you are unable to select player mentoring. Which is a huge shame really.

Looking at the league set up once again. It’s not as simple as every team plays each other. It is split into 2 divisions of 6 teams where by the top 4 in each go through to the next stages. You play 32 matches in the season.

I will keep adding to this and re-writing this each time I discover something new within the MLS..

The MLS is run the same way as all North American pro-leagues (American Football, Baseball, Basketball & Hockey).

A brief explanation on waivers:

When a team wants to release a player, they need to put him on waivers. When a player is put on waivers, all the other teams are notified and have an option of putting in a claim for him. If only 1 team puts in a claim, they will automatically receive the player. However, if more than one team puts in a claim, the team lowest in the standing will get him. If it is the offseason, the team with the worst record from the previous year would win the claim.

If no one claims the player, he will become a free agent.

I hope this helps someone.
