Default How to make Rounded Stadium Logos

How to make Rounded Stadium Logos

*NOTE*: The following is a guide for making Rounded Stadium Logos. In bold red, I have indicated the parts of the guide that are still required to perform even when using the Photoshop Actions for making Rounded Stadium Logos. Everything in normal black font is extra (for people who aren't usign the action files). Enjoy!

Find a good picture of your desired team's stadium on the internet. I recommend checking WorldStadiums.com and using the second picture displayed for the club of your choice, as it is usually a good picture and angle to use for the logos. Right click the picture and select copy. Make sure the picture is big enough.

Open up Photoshop and create a new document. The document size should be determined automatically already because of the size of the image you copied. I suggest you use the following options: RGB Color and Transparent background.

Now, paste your stadium image onto the blank canvas. Go to Image > Image Size and resize the image to have a width of 105 pixels (the height doesn't matter). Play around with how much of the stadium you want to show by adjusting the image size. Now go to Image > Canvas Size and resize the canvas to have a width of 105 pixels and a height of 58 pixels.

Now copy the club's logo from the internet, open a new document with RGB Color and Transparent background, and paste the logo in the new document. Make sure you have used a combination of the lasso tools, the magic wand tool, and the eraser to make the background of the club logo transparent. Go to Image > Image Size and resize the image so it's slightly cut off when you move the logo from the document to the stadium background document. Usually a well-cropped logo fits well on the stadium document using a height of 70-85 pixels. Take the club logo and move it to the stadium document. You should have resized your logo enough so that a little bit of the top and bottom of the logo is cut off. This is good, it's the look we're trying to get.

Set the opacity of the logo layer to 60%.

Go to Edit > Define Pattern and save the pattern.

Close that document (you do not need to save changes) and create a new document. Use a width of 105 pixels and a height of 58 pixels (I'd also use 72 pixels/inch resolution, RGB Color, and Transparent background). If you're planning on making many of these logos, save a preset for new documents with the same settings. Here's where it gets tricky, so follow along carefully.

For people using the Photoshop Actions: Now is the time to use the "FM Logo Part 1" action. Scroll down to the next bold red section for your next instructions.

Expand the box of the new canvas and zoom in 600% (you must do this). Use the Rounded Rectangle Tool (with a radius of 10 px) to make a rounded rectangular shape inside your canvas. Here's the key though: your little cursor that looks like a + should be one pixel inside the canvas when you're drawing the rounded rectangle. You know you've done it right when your rounded rectangle and canvas looks like this:

See how the black edges of the rounded rectangle are right next to the boundaries of the canvas? That's how it should look like on yours as well. If it's not exactly like that, check the previous screenshot and see if you have different settings up at the top of the screen.

Now, on the box on the right of the screen, there should be a "Path" tab. Click on that and there should be a "Work Path". Right-click on that and press "Fill Path". Under Contents, use "Pattern" and select the pattern you defined earlier. The rest of the settings should read:

Mode: Linear Dodge
Opacity: 100%
Untick "Preserve Transparency"
Feather Radius: 0 pixels
Untick "Anti-aliased"

Your canvas should now look like this:

For people using the Photoshop Actions: Now is the time to use the "FM Logo Part 2" action. This should complete the logo for you. Scroll down to the next bold red section for instructions on how to save your new logo.

Now, go to "Paths" and right-click "Work Path" again. This time, click "Make Selection". Your settings should be like this:

Feather Radius: 1 pixel
Tick "Anti-aliased"
Tick "New Selection"

Go to Edit > Stroke and stroke the selection with black. Your settings should be like this:

Width: 1 px
Color: Black (#000000)
Location: Center
Mode: Normal
Opacity: 100%
Untick "Preserve Transparency"

Your canvas should now look like this:

On the box on the rigth side of the screen, there should be a "Layers" tab. Click on that and you should see your layer as "layer 1" (unless you re-named it). Right-click on "layer 1" and click on "Blending Options". Tick "Contour". Your settings should look like this:

Click on "Bevel and Emboss" so that it is ticked (it should have already been ticked after clicking on "Contour"). I used my default settings except I changed the Shadow Mode Opacity from 75% to 15%. Your defaults may have been different than mine, so make sure your settings look like this:

Click OK and now your canvas should have a nice bulge effect on it. It should look something like this when minimized to 100% zoom:

Go to Image > Canvas Size and resize the canvas to have a width of 125 pixels and keep the height of 58 pixels. Your logo is now done. It should look like this:

To save, go to File > Save for Web and save as a PNG-24 with "Interlaced" and "Transparency" ticked.

And that's it, you're done! You should have a nice, neat, Rounded Stadium Logo that looks like this:
