Last years 'AL. Challenge' was fairly successful. One of the most viewed challenges with 1700+ hits and a good few pages of comments and interest from other challengers. I also got a few emails so thanks everyone! Due to its late start date (fm08 had been out for ages before challenge got going) it went on a back burner in the run-up to FM09 but with the new version just released there is no excuse! so now for the new and improved challenge!
The Story:
You are a football journeyman who has just retired from non-league football and obtained the nessecery coaching badges to go into management. Knowing it will be difficult to find a job in europe you decide the best option is to learn your trade in a developing footballing nation. (You need to start this with 'automatic' reputation)
The League:
You need to start unemployed but the other catch is you need to start outside of europe in a 'developing football nation' somewhere like Asia, Oceania or Africa. Has to be small club with low reputation or a minor footballing nation. I was thinking somewhere like Hong Kong, Singapore, Mongolia, Cook Islands, Rwanda, India, El Salvador, Barbados etc you get the idea. (most nations become playable if you select 'upload all players from ...')
AL.s top tip: if you select A-League in australia as one of your playable divisions most small oceanic national teams become playable. Vanuata, Samoa and Cook Island all start mangerless and this is an ideal starting point. (even with auto-rep if you apply you should easily get a job with these nations)
The Team:
Any team you want (within guidelines above) also it will be luck of the draw given what jobs you successfully apply for or are offered.
The AimThe Rules
- To use your chosen team as a stepping stone into european management
- Or to improve your team/nation until they are a significant footballing power. (i.e take them to the Oceanic cup/World Cup etc)
- to win as many Trophies and honours as you can
- Ultimately become a World Reknowned manager
Any questions/suggestions?
- you must set your past experience to 'automatic' or 'sunday league player' and start unemployed
- You must post screen shots of your transfers after each window
- You must post screen shots of the manager overview at each window and at the end of the season
- Use this thread to keep progress of your game
- Tactics/player discussion is allowed
I suggest loading (hong kong, indonesia, singapore etc) leagues as your first steps into club football as well as Australia league (which gives national team options as described above) as well as loading blue sq north/south england and/or italy C2 as a logical jump into european management. (or even N.ireland)
Good Luck! You'll need it as this is one long and tough challenge! I'm going to use this game as the one I stick to for fm09, idea is I will build up a long and varied career with plenty twists and turns. I'll be playing this for the long haul but hoped some of you would like to join me and at least give it a go!

Thats me started this mamouth task.
Got offered the Samoa and Cook Islands jobs and I've opted for Cook Islands although Samoa are the better team(star player being Chris Cahill, Tims brother). Cook Islands apparently only has a tiny population of 20,000 people so you can imagine the standard of players I have to choose from!
and here is their national stadium:
nice challenge, when i eventually get fm09 i think i will have to have a crack at this challenge
Had to restart. Problem loading my save game. Got the cook islands job again though hopefully it won't mess up again.
Did you fix that save game problem mate? Looks like a tough challenge, after i get abit better at the game in general, i will give it a shot :D
I will give this ago when I get bored of my Hibernian game. 1 season in Hearts last lol
Join the club! Ive reinstalled my game and everything is running smoothly. Obviously started unemployed and got the cook islands international job almost immediately. then quickly took my first steps into club football by getting offered the eastern job. Im really pleased with this so far!
An international manager (albeit of a tiny, lowly ranked -202nd! nation) so early in my career. Eastern have a decent team and finances for standard of the hong kong league. First things first is to sort that defence out though! it is truely dreadful! The couple of brazilians in the squad look good though, looking like they'll be key players already.
I'll have to watch the foreigners rule (maximum 9) but Im going to try and bring 1 or 2 of my internationals over and maybe loan them out. Even a crap hong kong team must be better than the amateur cook island clubs. No doubt I have a hard task ahead of me.
Gonna start this sometime next week, I was wondering the other day whether you were gonna continue this over to FM 09.

Do you have the same problem tht none of the crap part-time players won't leave and therefore not able to get more foriegn players and wage budgets![]()
Certainly have and now we have more time hopefully more people will have a good go of it. and Thanks!
Yeah I've punted them in my reserves. Foreigners isn't so much of a problem as the 6 you start with are definately first team. I strengthened my squad so far with Demar Stewart and Cai Xi (amazing for standard of league) both are certain backs and I got a Hong Kong goalkeeper who has had a few caps aswell. Hopefully that will be the defence tightened up and as attack looks ok already I'm just going to add a few wide players and I'll be done.
As of yet I've not found a tactic im happy with. Need to tweak that before season and my international matches start.
Found a tactic tht works it's amazin for this league. started game but only played pre-season friendlies will be getton down to the real buisness tomoz
how the jambos get on today play well?
Ye was goin to go to the game but didn't wish i hadn't supposed to be there best performance this season
Great stuff Al! I had a go at this challenge last year too and thoroughly enjoyed it.
So expect me to be having a crack at some point!
Cheers.
Back from the dead.

I'm furious! I am actually sitting here raging at my computer screen in frustration!![]()

I holidayed to just before my first international. I forgot I'd have to confirm my selection though. So although I'd spent ages scouring through the cook islands national pool for attributes to fit a tactic my assistant got the choice on making final selection. He is an idiot! cook islands are crap as it is but he left out all my star players (if you can call them that!) he even left out the most expercienced player and my national captain!
For example I had defenders with 2 and 3 stats for tackling and marking! He didn't even call up enough strikers so I had no forwards to call upon.
Was never going to be easy but still thought I had a chance as I was playing an equally poor country in the form of 'mayotte'. With the national stadium at bursting point, over full capacity with an attendance of 3004 I lined up for my first match. I got beat 5-1. everytime i tried to pull a goal back i was caught on the break (well usually a massive punt over the top) my defenders couldn't head a ball to save there lives and I could've done a better job in goals myself! It was all mistakes, defensive errors, terrible passes etc. So frustrating!
I've sacked my national assistant for being a complete and uttertly useless and needless to say that will be the last cap any of those players(and I use the term loosely) will 'earn'.
1 - 5

I'm just starting my game now. I loaded up all English leagues, as well as Welsh for my step into Europe. Outside of the continent, I'll be focussing on China and Australia, as well as international management. I'll keep you all updated. :)
