Jeff Bridges is Back for Tron 2 - Teaser Trailer Revealed at Comic Con

The trailer has leaked onto YouTube : YouTube - Tron 2 Bootleg Trailer http:// teaser-Trailer.com

Quote:
There have been a number of rumblings in the film news world about another Tron film being released by Disney, including word that it would be in 3D, and even that Jeff Bridges was going to be hearing a pitch about a sequel. No actual information had been confirmed though.

Until now.

Courtesy of the folks at Disney, Comic Con got a surprise look at a scene from the film. The teaser starts off with the camera panning through a strange stylized landscape. At this point, nobody knew what we were watching, so only silence filled the hall. And then, two blue/yellow suit-wearing motorcyclists burst into frame, engaged in a frenzy of a race. Audiences erupted in applause.

The race continues to grow heated between the two players until the yellow guy finds a way to swerve in front of the blue, leaving his yellow race trail behind him. The blue guy smashes into it and causes sort of an electric ripple, launching him over the edge of the track. He grabs on a ledge, just barely holding on.

We then see a bearded Jeff Bridges in his house, sitting calmly with his legs crossed.

Back to the virtual world, we see the yellow guy standing over the blue. His visor lifts up, revealing Bridges underneath. The blue guy shouts, “This is just a game!” Bridges looks down, smiles, and pulls out a glowing yellow circular disc (fans will probably know the name of this thing). Looking at the camera, he swings the disc down violently and the title lights up on screen: Tr2n.

Stupid title aside, this clip was easily enough to highten my anticipation for this film. Not only is it just incredibly awesome to see Jeff Bridges go back to a character he played before he was a household name, but the way the graphics have been updated is slick without being unfaithful to the original. In a way, I’ve been convinced the sequel is no longer an unnecessary Hollywood cashgrab, because the contrast between the old and the new is very reminiscent of what recent generations have been experiencing with constantly updated video game graphics/technology.

Apparently, it will be about a year until any other footage for the film will be seen. Hopefully this means Disney is planning on having a full-on panel presentation next year.

Pixar Developing Monsters, Inc. 2?

Quote:
It’s funny how the tides change so quickly. At WonderCon 2007, Brad Bird insisted that Pixar was not in the sequel business. Bird said:

“At Pixar, the bottom line is the story that you’re telling. And Pixar does not look at sequels as a financial plan. We feel we have a relation ship with the audience and that they believe in each movie we put out. We believe completely in every movie we put out. If I can come up with a story that is as good or better than that first film, then I’d love to return to that world, but it would have to be story first.”

After Disney acquired Pixar, Toy Story 3 was confirmed. Less than a year after Wondercon, Disney announced that the Emeryville powerhouse would be making a Cars sequel. And just last week at Comic Con, Monsters, Inc director Peter Doctor revealed to MTV that they have quietly been developing ideas for a sequel.

“We’ve thought about it,” “Monsters, Inc.” director Pete Doctor told MTV. “We’ve got a couple ideas.”

It seems to me that Pixar is in the sequel business. And don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti sequel. I’m just anti-bad sequels. And yes, most sequels are not The Dark Knight or The Godfather 2. Most sequels are made for money reasons rather than story reasons. So the question is, does the world of Monsters, Inc have enough laugh juice for a second movie? I’ll tell you this: I have a lot more faith in a Monsters, Inc sequel than I do in Cars 2.

Prince of Persia Pushed Back to 2010

Quote:
Disney has announced that they will be pushing the big screen adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time back to May 28th 2010, from it’s previously announced June 19th 2009 release date. The old date was one week before Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The good news is that the new date is part of Memorial Day weekend, which will give the film a four day opening. The bad news is that the movie will now have to contend with Shrek Goes Fourth, which opens one week prior, and Marvel’s Thor, which is scheduled to hit theaters one week later.

Prince of Persia is an action adventure video game which follows an adventurous prince who teams up with a rival princess to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world. Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) must join forces with Tamina (Gemma Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time. Alfed Molina and Ben Kingsley co-star. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire helmer Mike Newell is directing under producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Persia began filming at the beginning of July in Morocco.

TRON 2: The Story Behind the Comic Con Teaser Trailer

Quote:
The biggest shocker at Comic Con was the premiere of a 3-minute trailer for Tron 2. The reason why it was such a shocker is that, as far as anyone knew, the film hadn’t even gone into production. But the trailer featured a fantastic completed lightcycle chase. So how did it come to be?

Jim Hill explains all the behind the scenes happenings of this project in detail on his blog, but here is the basic details: John Lasseter got behind the project. Disappointed with the direction Steve Lisberger was going in, Lasseter hired Lost writers Eddie Kitsis & Adam Horowitz to overhaul the screenplay. And as we reported a while back, the mouse house hired commercial director Joseph Kosinski (you can see some of his fantastic work here) to helm the project.

But the guys at Disney weren’t yet convinced that Kosinski’s vision of Tron 2 would be commercially viable. So Kosinski spent six months with Digital Domain creating the three-minute-long sequence which was shown at Comic Con as a teaser trailer. And judging by the fan reaction at the Con, I’m guessing that Disney will fast track the sequel into production to meet the announced 2011 release date.

Sony Developing Venom Spin-Off Movie

Quote:
Sony is considering making a Spider-Man spin-off movie based on the popular villain Venom. The company had previously commissioned Jacob Estes (Mean Creek) to pen a take, but is now considering going in a completely different direction according to The Hollywood Reporter. They are seeking new writers for an entirely new draft, and are also supposedly looking at replacing Topher Grace, who played the role in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. Sony is still hoping to release a fourth Spider-Man film in 2011. Raimi confirmed at Comic Con that he is still waiting to read the script. Basically, Sony is looking to squeeze as much out of their deal with Marvel as they can.

Comic Book movies are hot again, and Marvel’s option of the film rights to Spider-Man also give Sony the ability to to produce spin-off films based on the characters in that universe. I think hiring someone other than Topher for the role is a smart move. They really need to do everything they can to differentiate the spin-off from the lackluster third film. When I was younger, and had more time to read comics, Venom was one of my favorites. But never once did I actually buy an issue of the Venom spin-off series, because I never thought it would be that interesting. And my thoughts are virtually the same on a Venom spin-off film. Venom is one of those baddies who is only as interesting as his opponent. And I’m pretty sure this project would be Spidey-free.

Mike Myers is Writing Austin Powers 4

Quote:
Following the epic disaster that was The Love Guru, Mike Myers is going back to well and is writing a fourth Austin Powers movie with Baby Mama’s Mike McCullers. According to Nikki Finke, the story will be “very personal with a father and son theme loosely based on his own life.” That’s right, the story will focus on the father son relationship of Dr. Evil and his son Scott Evil, played in the films by Seth Green. I always found Dr. Evil to be the most interesting aspect of the series. But I think they have played out the character in the two sequels, and I’m very skeptical that Myers can create a funny fourth film without having to resort to cheap laughs like tons of celebrity cameos.

No studio deal is in place, but it’s a sequel and I’m sure New Line/Warner Bros will quickly give it a greenlight. But the real question is: has Mike Myers lost it? And more importantly to the movie studios, is Myers still a box office draw? I think the Austin Powers brand still has enough juice to attact audiences, at least one last time.

I just thought I'd add a bit in myself as I'm quite excited about this one.

Friday The 13th.
Quote:
In January 2007, producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller outlined their intended goal to bring the remake to life. Fuller and Form were approached by New Line to create a remake, but because Paramount still owned certain copyrights to the first film the remake would not be able to use anything from the original. Paramount, who wanted to be included in the remake, approached the producers and gave them license to use anything from the original films, including the title. With Paramount on board, Fuller and Form decided they wanted to use pieces from each of the first three films. Fuller stated, "I think there are moments we want to address, like how does the hockey mask happen. It’ll happen differently in our movie than in the third one. Where is Jason from, why do these killings happen, and what is Crystal Lake?" The producers expressed an interest in using the character of Tommy Jarvis and stated that they were working out a sensible origin story for Jason that would make sense. Ultimately, it was decided that Friday the 13th would not be an origin story, but that the audience would get a sense of the history as the film progressed. The audience will see Jason transition from wearing a bag over his head—similar to Friday the 13th Part 2—to finding and actually placing the hockey mask over his face, whereas in Friday the 13th Part III he merely came out of the barn already wearing the mask.

Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, writers of Freddy vs. Jason, were announced in October 2007 to have been hired to pen a script for the remake. The film was reported to focus on Jason Voorhees, and that he will keep his trademark hockey mask. The film is being produced by Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller through Bay's production company Platinum Dunes, for New Line Cinema. Director Jonathan Liebesman was originally in negotiations to direct the remake in February 2006, but was replaced by Marcus Nispel, director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake of 2003, in November 2007. On March 21, 2008, it was confirmed that Jared Padalecki was in final negotiations to star as the lead who investigates what happened at Crystal Lake. On March 31, 2008 iFMagazine reports that Derek Mears is in final talks to portray Jason Voorhees, while Variety reported on April 2, 2008 that Amanda Righetti was in final negotiations to take the female lead in the new Friday the 13th. Danielle Panabaker, Jonathan Sadowski, Travis Van Winkle, Aaron Yoo, Julianna Guill round out the rest of the cast. Nana Visitor has been cast as Pamela Voorhees. A young Jason is to be played by Caleb Guss. The film will have its U.S. release on Friday, February 13, 2009. Principal photography began on April 21, 2008 in Austin, Texas and wrapped up on June 13, 2008.
