Default Is this unfair?

During Paul Ince's rise to the rarefied heights of the Premier League, John Barnes has been struggling to even get recognition in the foothills of the game.

Ince became the top flight's first black English manager when he was appointed as Mark Hughes' successor at Blackburn on Sunday.
Barnes, on the other hand, has been applying for vacancies in the lower leagues without success.

It is a situation that has left England's finest black player perplexed, frustrated and angry.

"I've applied for numerous jobs and sometimes I haven't even had the courtesy of a reply to my application letter," Barnes told BBC Sport.
"Perhaps I could understand it if I was applying for jobs at the top level but these were clubs in League One."

While the 44-year-old is delighted by Ince's appointment, he is sceptical about whether it will herald a new dawn for black bosses.

His experiences, as well of those of other aspiring black managers like Luther Blissett, have persuaded him that there is not equality of opportunity.

"I believe the situation for black managers is like it was for black players back in the 1970s," he stated.

"Black players used to be put out on the wing because it was deemed they could run fast but not think too well.

"They weren't trusted to be a playmaker in central midfield or to wear the captain's armband.
"Now I think there is an analogous situation in management. Chairmen don't believe we can do the top managerial jobs.

"I look at someone like Luther Blissett, who is a former England international and has played abroad at the top level.

"He has been applying for manager's jobs in the Football League for 15 years and not got anywhere. This is all about opportunities."

Although Ince's appointment has been heralded as a major breakthrough for black managers, there is still a dearth of coaches of non-white bosses in the game. Keith Alexander, who succeeded Ince at Macclesfield, is the only other black manager in the Football League.

Even more startling is the statistic, provided by Warwick Business School, that there are only seven other black coaches of any capacity in the league.

This constitutes only about 1% of the total number of coaches - despite more than 20% of players being black.

Perhaps drawing on his own experiences at Celtic, Barnes says it is unfair to hold Ince up as a pioneer for all black managers.

He said: "If he doesn't succeed, does that count against all black managers? I don't think so, just as if he does succeed it doesn't mean all black managers are good."

While people like Gareth Southgate or Roy Keane got to manage in top flight football, the likes of Paul Ince, who was just as good as those two, perhaps better, had to settle in League 2.

Whats your opinion on this subject?

I dont think it should matter whether a player or manager or anybody for that matter is black or white.

Its about their ability that matters, and every manager has to start somewhere, so why can't John Barnes?

75% of the players in England are black, yet there are only 4 black managers.

I thought it was ridiculous the way that SSN went on and on about Ince being the first black Premier League manager, and it meant that he got his recognition for being black and not his coaching ability

Roy Keane started with sunderland in the championship so he didn't start in the premiership, also I wish that they didn't say he was at a disadvantage because he was black. Why does he have to play that card, alot of white managers have to start at the bottom and its not like he applied for jobs in the higher leagues and they turned around and said "I don't want a black guy running my club". I'd rather he turned up, got congradulated for being the first black manager in the top flight and him turn around and say "thanks, i'm going to do my best and take advantage of this opputunity" instead of playing the race card and try and make people feel sorry for him getting payed to manage in the premiership, even though I don't agree with how any ex-players get jobs at big clubs just because they are ex-players while others are left to climb the ladder from the very bottom.

I don't think at all it is due to his skin colour. If he was good enough, he would be chosen. Same goes for the rest of the english black managers.

Another thing is, Barnesy was a good player, but he was never a leader, Leroy Rosenior is a leader and so is the Guv'nor, Rafa is a leader, fergie is a leader.....you get the picture, Les Ferdinand wasn't a leader, has studied for his badges but doesn't want to manage.

If a black manager wants to manage in the Premiership, get a good CV and your UEFA Pro License like everyone else.

Barnes has done little to sell himself as good management material, but if he is good enough then perseverance will I'm sure prove it. You could argue that the percentage of black players in the leagues who stay in the game is disproportianate but I don't think it's a matter of race that's keeping Barnsey on Channel 5 and Strictly Come Dancing instead of the dugout.

But Digger my old son, you were a genius on the pitch.

Thanks to Liveru for the sig

If you think about it logically, a chairman isn't going to care if your black or white, he wants you to win matches and make him money.

What I don't want to happen and what I hate personally is positive descrimination. I would hate it if people complain and cause problems about there not being enough black managers in football so that the FA say something like "every league must have at least 3 black managers otherwise it will be cancelled until the problem is fixed" it would cause hassle and chairmen will be forced to sign a black person other a white person, not because the black person is better but just because he is black. Extreme yes but it is said to be happening in south africa. (rugby)

he hasn't done himself any favours by whinging about it in the media, can't see many chairmen looking favourably on him after he has shown himself to be a whiner.
