Got them promoted in my first season in two different games
You wont need a GK as bialkowski is a great keeper, premiership standard hopefully by the year you are in, you'll only need to replace him when you get promoted
Kasper hamalainen is a great signing for saints, great set pieces and dribbling and a really cheap price
Two other brilliant players for the start of the game are Mika Aaritalo (end up paying around 400k) and Pablo Piatti (500k to beat off competition) two hard players to get hold of but if you can get them they're brilliant
Bogdan Stancu is a great cheap striker that plays well in the championship, young too, try and bring in victor moses on a free after a few years hes great too.
If you get a bit of a bigger transfer budget one year try Genero Zeefuik, will cost 1m-2m but once you win promotion and he gets a bit of first team under his belt he will bang them in
Omar Benzerga is a good cheap defensive midfielder that you can get when he's young on a free sometimes if he wants to come
I usually offload Dyer, Licka, B Wright Phillips, Wright and a few others, also you can get a really good price for Lallana if you sell him at the right time, you could be looking at 500k-1m
Use the cash to bring in a few better players and bring in some better staff, this site has a really good training tips and coaching guides etc.
Obviously you're 2 seasons in so the prices on some of these players might have changed significantly, ive never played saints in the championship other than the first season so i cant be much more help sorry :(
