Edit - The title should read 4-3-1-2, not 4-3-1-1
This tactic was originally created on the SI Forums by
MD-Ronaldo for version 8.0.1 of FM08. It worked superbly, in particular for
Manchester United, with whom the tactics was specifically created. Obviously it can be adapted to suit other teams and players.
Unfortunately, we've not heard anything from
MD-Ronaldo for some time now. When the 8.0.2 patch was released, a lot of the changes that were made caused problems with this tactic.
I've made them available to download below. You'll find there's both a "Home" & "Away" tactic. Works fine with Manchester United (and other teams) with 8.0.2.

Mostly, I've shored things up defensively a little better since the 8.0.2 patch.
This was my own initial progress.
Conceded a goal each in the League Cup, and Champions League, but fielded my fringe players and some youngsters in each game. Only league goal conceded so far was in a 4-1 victory over Chelsea with a direct free-kick.
The league table after 10 games.
I need to add here that I do go into a little detail. I always use opposition instructions and I generally have my two centre-backs man marking opposing strikers.
If I'm not entirely happy with how my team is performing during a match, I'll make slight changes to mentality, passing and tempo.
Team talks I tend to encourage more than get upset with a player, although I will say I'm "disappointed" if a player is on a 6 or lower match rating. If he doesn't improve quickly after half-time, I'll change him for someone else.
I still use this system when I'm playing with Manchester United. I particularly like the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo performs similarly in-game to his real-life exploits, chipping in with plenty of goals.
