I woke up, still buzzing from the previous days events. I had been offered a 5 year contract at my beloved Wolverhampton Wanderers. The trial went unbelievably well, me and my best mate Tom Hooper, whom I call TH stole the show and dominated matches from the left side of the park. I could see that Ron and the other spectators were impressed with us and our nerves settled down as the game went on. We were in cruise control and I could see that this was our big chance to break into football.

I walked out of my house and in the direction of the local newsagents. It was a beautiful morning with the sun high in the sky and birds singing. As I entered the shop I felt that there was a sad mood in there. I picked up the paper, took one look at the front page and paid the lad at the counter. I turned to the back page straight away and was astonished to see that there had been a train crash last night, which had killed less than 100 people, including Mick McCarthy and Tony Mowbray.

That brought a tear to my eye, I’d never met Mick or Tony but I was still absolutely distraught.

I received a call from Wolves 5 minutes later saying that they wanted me at the club as soon as possible. I asked them what they wanted but they had hung up before I had the chance to finish my sentence. I phoned TH telling him of the news, he was as shocked as me and said that he was looking forward to meeting Mowbray, although it can’t happen now. He also received a call from his club, West Brom, telling him that they wanted him at the club quickly too.

I sprinted home as fast as I could, put on some suitable attire, hopped onto my bike and made my way to the training ground.
