You'll succeed. Im 13 and im doing superb with Darlington. This is what i did.
1) Get rid of every coach and assistant manager. Replace them lol. However its optional. Use Tugs Training, you can download it at this site.

2) Sign players.
FM08: Players For League 2 <- BTW players are for 8.0.1 patch (I like it better) so some info might not be right...
I told the board that I would win the league (for more money) I then would lower my wage budget by around 2k, and it will increase the fundings to buy players. Board Room - Budget Adjustment if you dont know how to do this.
3) I suggest u get good keepers, a CB, LM, and a forward. Always sign Alex Fernandez. Tommy Hoiland if u can get him mate.
4) Stats with Darlington (me) I nearly finished a season, homework slowing me down but this is how good im doing:

JPT North Final VS Crewe
1st IN The League by 12 points
Knocked out of League Cup first round
