As with any major football rivalry, gloating and banter between the two sets of fans is commonplace. United fans point out that City have gone awhile without winning a major trophy, whereas City fans claim United do not actually come from Manchester. United's Old Trafford ground lies just outside the city boundaries in Trafford Borough. Fireworks expected... its the Manchester Derby! Andriy Nesmachnyi picked up his 5th booking of the season for a slide tackle on Ronaldo. In the 6th minute Utd broke City's defence and Paul Scholes slid the ball home from Rooney's pass. As the game progressed City created more and more chances and before half time were unlucky not to go in level with a great bit of play from Aaron Lennon and Elano. City came out rallied for the 2nd half and an inspired substitution by manager Friar to replace Petrov for Ireland proved a great sub. Finally in the 58th minute, United's defence cracked. Hamann found Martins with a great ball and the Nigeria international took it past Van Der Sar and slotted it home. Soon after City thought they're hard work would have been rewarded further when Wes Brown was heading for a second yellow card, only to escape with a warning. With 1 minute of the whole game to go City won a corner. Ireland took and the ball was soon cleared back to the Irishman who swung a great cross into the near post. To the delight of 48,000 people it was met by the head of Obafemi Martins who directed it into the top corner of the net. 2-1!!! The final whistle went soon after and City earnt a well deserved win! Manager's comments: A fantastic month for us with two great wins where we were expected to loose. They were both tough games but we have come through them and proved we are no push-overs. We will continue our bid to climb up the table and these 3 results are a great start for our re-newed bid for Europe after a sticky patch in October. |
