Chievo Verona - Torino

22nd of October 2006
Marcantonio Bentegodi, Verona
Italian Serie A 2006/2007 - Week 8

49' Simone Barone, 69' Elvis Abbruscato, 88' Giuseppe Pancaro

Absolutely magical second half display from Torino againist high-flying Chievo Verona gave Il Granata probably the biggest triumph of the season so far.

Torino was facing tough trip after a disappointing 0:0 draw with Ascoli and they had to do it without Stefano Fiore who'll spend the rest of the month in sidelines, but returns in November.

It was suprise tactical change from Torino manager Tanel Tursk as he went to play with a 4-3-1-2 formation as Giuseppe Pancaro started the game and Roberto Muzzi was on bench for the first time this year. The formation change also bringed in Gianluca Comotto to the squad while Ivan Franceschini and Diego De Ascentis had to give up their places.

The tactic didn't seem to be working at the start as Denis Godeas only was the right touch away from opening the scoring in the 4th minute, but instead he bursted the ball over in his attempt for a lob.

Same guy scraped the woodwork just a minute later with a stunnig header while Pietro Sammarco curling shot from distance also hit the post.

Though Torino seemed to be getting back into match and their first real chance came when Elvis Abbruscato squeezed himself through Petri Pasanen and Lorenzo D'Anna in Chievo defence, but shot the ball over the goal.

Giuseppe Pancaro created some panic in the overcrowded Chievo penalty area just minutes later, but he hit the sidenet as the other twenty minutes of the first half very boring.

At half-time Tursk made quite a few players change their positions when he bringed in Iacopo Balestri for Roberto Stellone as Cedric Konan moved foward to the striker position.

Il Granata didn't take too long to grab the match opener after the break as Nikola Lazetic was having yet another stunning day on the left wing and his cross found Simone Barone diving header as the ball flew into the roof of the net.

Barone great diving header opens the scoring!

Soon after Cedric Konan hit the post as the near post was empty and Toro fans couldn't believe that they weren't 2:0 up.

Torino side had totally transformed into superstars over the half-time break and Alessandro Rosina's brilliant breakthrough only ended up in the side-net as he was one on one with Vincenzo Sicignano. He could've passed the ball to Elvis Abbruscato who had free way to unguarded goal.

Turks stunned his supporters by bringing in veteran Roberto Muzzi for his first appearance of the season in the 60th minute for Cedric Konan.

The fans sent out a breathe of relief dozen minutes later though. Giuseppe Pancaro cross found uncovered Elvis Abbruscato who comfortably headed past Sicignano who was moving completely the other direction as he didn't see Abbruscato getting at the end of the cross.

Chievo woke up for some minutes, but their long range efforts didn't really bother Torino. Simone Tiribocchi though skimed the woodwork again, but Sammarco curling shot and Zanchetta free-kick were totally under control of Cristiano Lupatelli.

Torino wanted some more though and Rosina's shot from just seven meters was followed by more than stunning save from Sicignano who made up for his earlier misjudgement.

But he couldn't do anything when Pancaro scored a goal you would never except from a veteran full-back.

The former Lazio ace made a fool out of a defence that is called one of the best in Serie A after the scoop of Petri Pasanen, dribbling past two players on the wing and then sending in a magnificient curler into the far top corner.

Pancaro scored a fabulous goal!

That goal was enough to give Torino a victory againist the previously third placed side of the Serie A as Torino now overtook the position themselves while Nikola Lazetic was a Sky Italia's man of the match.

Torino: 28-Cristiano Lupatelli; 3-Gianluca Comotto, 2-Raffaele Schiavi, 25-Marco Di Loreto, 16-Giuseppe Pancaro ; 24-Cedric Konan (69' 9-Roberto Muzzi), 8-Simone Barone , 17-Nikola Lazetic; 10-Alessandro Rosina; 19-Elvis Abbruscato , 11-Roberto Stellone (45' 22-Iacopo Balestri)
