Board Meeting

1st of December 2006

I had been called to the board meeting for this month. I opened the white door. Dozen men in black suits where there. Not really interested in football, atleast it seemed so. I didn't know why they had been even involved in this, there's no profit in this club. I didn't bother to aks that either though. It was irrelevant information for my head.

They all looked at me and it wasn't very hostile. That staring seemed so rude that I couldn't even remember to say hi on my way in. I started walking towards the table, a little too late I was as on my way to here in the corridor I had to visit the toilet.

Anyway, I noticed that there were no empty chairs. I told that to the board and one of them pointed at a wooden chair in the corner of the room and said that I could take this one. "Yes, ofcourse" were the words coming out of my mouth after that. It wasn't usual tone ofcourse, they were putting me in a wooden chair while relaxing in soft modifyable moving couches.

Carlos Oliveira rised up from his chair, walked to the table where his portfolio was, taking couple of papers there. Those papers were the financial report just finished by the secretary from last month. Dreadful stuff, I didn't know anything about it before.

The reason why I was called here was exactly that, they were counting about my business skills to make it better. There was no attendances, we had a giant stadium maitenance fee to pay every month and ofcourse wages.

"I came to football to get out of the bussiness. I am good at it, I don't deny, but I dislike it. And I don't want to think about any profits or expenses," I said to the board after they asked for my opinion.

The continued to talk about it and I sat down there listening, but I wasn't going to back down from my earlier. I was thinking, but nothing came. As they had been arguing, giving out ideas for like quarter of a hour I took the papers, dived into them more deeply.

After dozen minutes of going it through, I throwed it on the table. The others stoped their arguments and I said, "That is a dead end. Or actually not. Only way out of here is for you to put in cash. Like it or not."

One of them then said, "I'm not going to put a money into a club that is wrestling in the second half of the Liga de Honra table."

"Excuse me. Are you hinting at anything," I turned my attention to the guy. He owned some big local fruit farm. I had seen him around once in a while.

"I'm saying that unless you can prove that club can play consistently I'm not putting any money into this. I have more chance earning that money back in Casino than in here at the moment," he told.

"We'll see about that. Everything takes it's own time. It's only 8 point fight to get to the second place, you will see. I will get it. And then you will start putting all your money here. Because it's going to be a goldhill. It's a promise," I raised from the chair and as I was opening the door quietly saying, "I will always keep my promisies. You better do the same."

That was my second meeting with all the board and again I was very angry at them, but I couldn't let the players see that as the new training session was starting soon.

I sat down in a chair nearby, it was a warm day for "winter", which you can't really call winter though. I needed to go deep into things, see what I've done wrong. I promised luck and promotion to the team, but I haven't bringed in anything yet.

Maybe this all was a little too hard. Maybe I shouldn't try work out billion dollar tactics which would only work in computer games as in real life players wouldn't dare to remember everything I'd teach them about it. Maybe I was trying to make simple things complicated. Sometimes it's genius to be simple.
